From Your Pastors
Dear Zion family –
We’re gearing up for a great weekend at Zion. This Sunday is Grandparents Day. To celebrate, we’ll have a fun photo booth in the lobby for grandparents and their families to take pictures and remember the occasion. We’ll also take a moment to honor our first responders. Wednesday, September 11, marks 23 years since the terror attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. 343 firefighters died that day. Since the attacks, almost the same number have died from diseases resulting from working near the ruins of the fallen towers. Our first responders put their lives on the line every day for our communities, so it is right for us to honor them.
This weekend, we’ll also be installing our awesome business manager, Steve Cashio, as a vicar at Zion. Steve is enrolled in a distance learning program at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, where he is studying to be ordained as a pastor in our church body. A vicarage is like an internship. It will allow Steve to get practical experience in some of the things pastoral ministry involves. Please congratulate Steve on being installed as a vicar and continue to pray for him as he studies and learns.
In worship we’re kicking off a new message series called “Better Together.” According to the Bible, we were designed for relationships – we were designed to do and be better when we’re together. But we all have relationships that, rather than making us better, make things worse. In this series, we’ll talk about the key ingredients we need to make our relationships better so we can be better! This weekend, we’ll talk about the key ingredient of honor and look at some words from Jesus about honor in Luke 14:7-11:
When Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, He told them this parable: “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Jesus explains that one of the best ways to make your relationships better is to treat others with honor. But it can be difficult to treat a person honorably who behaves dishonorably. Find out why honoring others is so critical to being better together this weekend in worship. We worship at 8 am in our beautiful historic sanctuary, at 10:45 am in our wonderful worship center, or online at zionwalburg.org.
Your pastors love you!

Dear friends,
As we prepare for our time with you in August to discuss Israel, Hamas, Zionism and antisemitism, I wanted to share a very important resource to lay a foundation for our time together.
My wife, Nancy, shared this book from her collection and I have found a FREE updated version online as a PDF.

Iron Sharpens Iron - Save the Date
November 10th, 5:30-7:30pm Zion Worship Center
Men- the simple Bible verse of John 20:21 says "Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” Have you felt the tug to tell someone about Jesus or have examples/stories you would like to share in addition to learning more about sharing your faith?
The next Iron Sharpens Iron will focus on examples and stories of sharing your faith as well as how to grow in sharing your faith. Pastor Zach will be our moderator and teacher in helping us learn and grow in this aspect of our walk with Jesus!
We invite you to (anonymously) submit stories and examples of sharing your faith, along with questions you may have about sharing your faith to the email zionwalburg.isi@gmail.com . These questions and stories will be shared/discussed on that evening as information for us to grow and learn about sharing our faith!
We look forward to seeing you there! As always, there will be a free meal and time to get to know each other!

Celebrate LHM's Growing Hispanic Ministry!
In the United States, Hispanics are the second-largest ethnic population. By 2060, it is expected that Hispanics will constitute more than 27% of the American population. As a mass media Gospel outreach organization, LHM is committed to reaching this rapidly growing audience with the Good News of the Gospel.
"The future is bright for connecting with Hispanics in North America. Join us in these efforts with your prayers that God reaches down through LHM to bring the Gospel to those who have yet to hear, that they might meet Jesus and find a home in His Church," says Rev. Dr. Chad Lakies, LHM's vice-president of ministry engagement.
Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, is a time designated to celebrate and recognize the rich cultural and historical heritage and contributions of Spanish-speaking communities in the United States. It can also be a time to educate and learn together.
Hispanic Heritage Month is not limited to a single nationality or ethnic group but celebrates the diversity of cultures and countries that make up the Hispanic community, including the millions of people whose ancestors came from Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, South America, and Spain.
LHM has created a bilingual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration focused on raising support for our U.S. Hispanic Ministries. During this time, your donations to LHM directly support these efforts and continue to provide biblical resources and Gospel-focused outreach to our local Hispanic communities.
Visit lhm.org/hhm to learn more about LHM's Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, including free Project Connect booklets and stickers.
