60 SECONDS WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT
Our District’s ‘Model Mustang’ incorporates five competencies (Innovative, Resilient, Collaborative, Global, Empowered) that we are committed to building in our PreK-12th grade students. What does ‘Global’ look like in our classrooms and what does it mean to students? Click HERE for this week’s episode as we visit SMS and see some in classroom experiences providing a global perspective for our students.
MUSTANG SPOTLIGHT - MRS. LISA SUPELAK, 5TH GRADE TEACHER AT KINSNER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Mrs. Lisa Supleak has been a teacher at Kinsner Elementary School for her entire SCS career. Mrs. Supelak teaches 5th grade and is in her 24th year in our District. A graduate of Strongsville High School, she says “I was fortunate to have amazing teachers growing up here in Strongsville that inspired me to become a teacher, and I try to carry on their legacy through my teaching.” Mrs. Supelak earned her undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University and graduate degree from Cleveland State University.
What does Mrs. Supleak love about teaching 5th graders at Kinsner? “I love connecting and forming relationships with my students each year and building our classroom community. I love the willingness my students have to challenge themselves, and being able to witness the feeling of accomplishment they get from being successful. I love seeing the progress that my fifth graders make throughout the year, knowing that their next step is a big one - to middle school.”
“I have been so lucky to have spent my entire career at Kinsner. I have made so many wonderful connections with families and colleagues over the years. Kinsner is my home away from home and I am grateful to be a part of such an amazing school.”
Thank you Mrs. Supelak for helping our 5th graders at Kinsner grow and develop, and preparing them for their next step to middle school! #BeTheDifference
WHITNEY 1ST GRADERS LEARN ABOUT ANIMALS & HABITATS
Whitney 1st grade students, led by Mrs. Havel, Mrs. Yonkof, Mrs. Rice, and Mrs. Sanniti, have been reading and writing about animals. Recently, students learned about the needs of animals (food, water, shelter, air) and that different animals live in different habitats to meet their needs. The students broke into groups and, depending on their their animal, had to decide what kind of habitat to build for it. They had to plan for its needs to be met in that habitat - what will it eat, how will it get water, where will it have a shelter?
The students then had to build their habitat. Each group had a different material (magnatiles, blocks, connecting cubes, kinex, legos, and pattern blocks) and the challenge was using the materials in creative ways to show their habitat. The students had to be innovative, collaborative and resilient!
