Colton Hills School Bulletin
6 June 2024
Introduction by Mrs K Fox, Assistant Headteacher
We are now in the final stretch of the exam season for our Year 11 and Year 13 students. Students who are working extremely hard will reap the rewards during the summer when they collect their results. Over the course of the remaining weeks, remember every bit of revision counts, please continue to support them in the concluding weeks. Following this, it would be great to see all Year 11’s return for our Sixth Form induction on Thursday 4th July and Friday 5th July.
In other news, I am sure you are aware of the government's focus on children attending school every day. It is crucial that students are in school on time every day and proactively taking part in lessons due to the impact on their academic grades. We are unable to replace learning, moments matter! Later this year the Local authority will be releasing information which we will send to parents regarding the new attendance processes and penalties. Please be mindful that holidays need to be taken out of term time.
On a more positive note, we have some exciting events coming up in the summer term with foreign exchange trips, prom, trips to universities, The Big Bang Fair, Key Stage 3 residential trips to Gwellig and Boreatton Park. There are also a number of afterschool and evening events such as the Bugsy Malone Production and the 50th Anniversary Celebration that are taking place in July, so don’t forget to book your tickets so you don’t miss out! We are also running free taster sessions for year 5 students in the community so they can have an opportunity to experience secondary school life. These sessions are 1 hour long, free and run from 24 - 27 June, book via website.
Good luck Year 11s!
Today, 6 June, we sent off our Year 11s as they depart for their study leave. This cohort has been through ups and downs in the last five in Colton Hills, including navigating their way through the the COVID pandemic. We wish them all the best for their GCSE examinations and look forward to welcoming them back on results day, 22 August.
Celebrating Pride Month and Gypsy, Roma, Travellers History Month
We are proud to celebrate diversity as part of our school values this June as we celebrate Pride Month and give recognition to the Gypsy, Roma and Travellers community.
Please support your child in understanding the importance of respecting diversity and encourage them to get involved in the activities and competitions posted on their year team channels on Teams. There are also recommended reading books in the library to mark Pride Month and Empathy Day (6 June).
Dhol drummers support local community event
On Sunday, 19 May our dhol drum performers gave up their sunday morning to flag off the cyclists who were racing for Compton Care Hospice. It was a glorious morning at Kingswinford Rugby Club and there was a great atmosphere at the starting line.
It was wonderful for parents to watch their children perform at the community event. Parents commented how proud they were and what a great opportunity it was for them to witness. Our students were outstanding in their professionalism at the event. They have truly justified why we are a community school and should be extremely proud of themselves for supporting this community fundraiser.
Year 10 Career Trips
Before the May half-term, Year 10 students embarked on a journey to experience life at Wolverhampton College. Students were given an insight into the mechanics and theory behind carpentry and put their practical skills to the test making an hinge joint which would start to form part of a roof for a house. Students showed resilience and determination learning new skills. More taster days will be taking place soon for Year 10s, these will be advertised on the year team channel.
Germany School Exchange Trip
Colton Hills staff and students have arrived safely at our partner school, IG Helpsen in Germany. They are enjoying an exciting week with our German friends, taking in the sights and immersing themselves in the german culture with their new friends! So far, they have visited Heide Amusement Park in northern Germany with their peers.
Students also tried traditional German food and we paid a visit to the German Emigration Centre in Bremerhaven. They also paid a visit to the Klimahaus, a mixture of a theme park and science centre where they crossed multiple continents to experience all kinds of different climates ranging from hot Africa to the icy Antarctic. We are looking forward to more updates from them!
Sixth Form Interviews with WWF
On 22 May, we had a visit from WWF, who wanted to film our Environment Leaders for the Leadership Skills Foundation programme. Super proud of how our sixth formers conducted themselves and worked around their busy timetable for the recording and interviews. They spoke about their experiences on the programme and what skills they have acquired from it, including boosting their confidence, better communication skills and being concerned and optimistic about the future of our natural environment. We are looking forward to seeing the final edit.
