Message from Principal Dailey
Hazelbrook Families,
After a week of preparing for the state test, students will begin testing on Monday. To learn more about the Oregon State Assessment System (OSAS), check out the information on TTSD’s testing page. Students' scores are used in conjunction with I-Ready data, academic grades, and teacher input to determine math placement as well as additional support that may be needed for your child.
Vanderbilt Health has some tips for families to help their child prepare for standardized tests. They include:
The night before:
Encourage teens to go to bed early enough to allow a full night’s sleep.
Help children resolve immediate arguments before going to bed.
Keep routines as normal as possible.
Mention the test to show you’re interested, but don’t dwell on it.
Plan ahead to avoid conflicts on the morning of the test. What tasks can you or your child get done the night before?
The morning of:
Get up early to avoid rushing. Be sure your children get to school on time.
Have your child eat a good breakfast but not a heavy one. A balance of complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats is ideal.
Have your child dress in something comfortable.
Be positive about the test. Acknowledge that tests can be hard and that they’re designed so that no one will know all of the answers. Explain that doing your best is what counts. The important thing is to make your child comfortable and confident about the test.
After the test:
Talk to your child about the experience, making sure you acknowledge the effort such a task requires.
Discuss what was easy and what was hard; discuss what your child learned from the test.
Ask what changes your child would make if he or she were to retake the test.
Explain that performance on a test is not a condition for you to love your child, that you love your child just for the person he or she is.
Take care, and have a great weekend!

TTSD Events
Tualatin Together
Tualatin Together, in partnership with TTSD, encourages you to have conversations with your student about fentanyl. Fentanyl is a dangerous drug that is circulating in Washington County. A tiny amount of fentanyl — the size of two grains of salt — can be fatal.
Fentanyl is often disguised as “look alike” pills. Some teens buy or get pills from classmates and friends, or via social media connections. They might think these pills are drugs like Adderall, Percocet, Oxycodone, or Xanax. What they may get are fake pills containing fentanyl. Fentanyl can also be contained in street drugs such as methamphetamines, ecstasy and heroin.
Let your student know that any pill they don’t get from a pharmacy may contain fentanyl, which can be fatal. Even if the pill comes from a friend or classmate, it could have fentanyl in it.
The New Drug Talk offers helpful resources for starting the conversation. For more information about Fentanyl, go to songforcharlie.org.
If you are worried about your student or looking for resources, a good place to start is your student's school counselor.
You can find more resources on the TTSD website. The Tigard High School-Based Health Center (503-431-5775) is able to provide Alcohol and Drug Assessments for all TTSD students. Lastly, the Washington County Crisis & Consultation Line is available 24 hours a day at 503-291-9111.

Tualatin Together

Summer Learning Program:
We have begun accepting applications for our annual Summer Learning Program! In this program, the learning focuses on the Oregon State Benchmarks appropriate for each child in mathematics, language arts (reading, writing, and speaking), and any other subjects in which the student needs help. Our Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidates tutor/teach students according to their learning needs. There are usually 4-5 students per 2-3 MAT candidates.
This year’s program will run July 1-August 1, Monday-Thursday, 9:30am-11:30am, and we welcome students entering grades 2-11 in 2024-25. The cost of the program is $125, though scholarships are available.
Online registration is now available here. To request a printable PDF or registration packet via postal mail, please contact Amy Kwong-Kwapisz at kwongkwa@up.edu or 503-943-7752.
