From Mrs. Barry
This is one of my favorite times of the year because I get to spend a lot of time in one of my favorite places - Aggieland! This weekend was especially great, because it was a reunion of sorts for my husband's college dorm buddies. We saw friends we haven't seen in years! These guys had the best time, laughing, joking, and ribbing each other. The teasing and insults flew - in fact, if you didn't know them, you would think they didn't like each other based on the unkind things they said!
As I listened to them, I couldn't help but think of something that has been happening with some of our Eagles. Just like my husband's buddies were ribbing each other, some of our students have been "roasting" other students, saying unkind things in an attempt to playfully tease or joke around. Unfortunately, elementary students don't have the emotional maturity that 50+ year old men do, and a lot of feelings have been hurt. The "jokes" have been taken too far, and have been said to some who didn't understand that they were an attempt at humor, and not meant to be hurtful.
Two of our Eagle Expectations are Be Kind and Be Respectful. Using teasing or sarcasm, even in a playful manner, doesn't match these tenets, and we are working hard to instill this in our students daily. Please help us in talking to your children about this - not everyone finds the same things funny, and we must be respectful in all of our interactions at school.
Thank you for your continued support! Together we continue to build MWE's amazing legacy! #60years
