Principal's Corner
Hello HMS Families!
It is hard to believe that we will be finishing up 3rd quarter at the end of the week, but we are flying right through this semester. Spring break has come and gone, now we are getting back into the swing of school. Our students have had a good week back from break, and only have one more long weekend over easter before MAP season is in full swing.
The end of March marks the end of 3rd quarter, however, there are a few items to have on your radar:
- Our annual fundraiser of selling chocolate is going on until March 25th. Permission slips have been sent home with students and emailed, however, I have attached the PDF if you have not seen the prizes for the sale.
- Coming in April we have 3 field trips with students, please have all permission forms turned in to the HMS office by April 3rd.
- Be on the lookout for another permission slip dealing with the solar eclipse happening on April 8th this year. We will take students outside to witness this event as the next one in the US is not until 2044.
Counselor's Corner
March began with a week of spring break! The character trait for March is perseverance which we all need as we enter the last quarter of the school year and all the busyness it brings. In Advisory, we will be exploring different careers and personal interests, strengths, and goals as we prepare for our Career Day on March 28. We have numerous presenters lined up for that day and students will get to sign up for 6 careers they are interested in learning about. If you have a career you would be willing to talk about, please contact the school at 816-732-4125.
We also have two outside agencies coming in March to talk with our kids. The first was March 13 with The Survival House of Warrensburg who came to discuss sexual abuse, the signs, ways to prevent and report. On March 19, Country Crossroads Counseling is sending a team to present to our students about Suicide Prevention–how to get help for yourself, noticing changes in others, and reporting concerns. Each presentation has an opt out form that will be emailed to parents. If you do not want your child to see either or both of these presentations, please contact the main office or return the form(s). Each presentation is designed to be informative while being age appropriate.
Team Spotlight
Meet our Sped Department!
The SPECIAL teachers make a big difference in our building for all kids! Combined, they have 42 years of experience. They have degrees from Mizzou, UCM, St. Mary of the Plains College, and Baker University. In the ultimate debate of beach or mountains there was no clear winner! One vote for beach, two votes for mountains, and one vote for both!

PTSO News
Attention Parents: We have elections coming up for our 2024-2025 PTSO board. HMS PTSO doesn’t have a lot of time demands as we only meet once per quarter. Fundraising planning has been fairly simple and we’ve been able to provide quite a bit for our students and teachers.
If you have a middle schooler, we encourage you to check into joining the PTSO board. If you or someone you know would enjoy serving our students and faculty, please reach out to Jill Carver, Jackie Hunnicutt, Cassi Page, Melissa Haggard or Stacey Stringer with any questions you may have.
Upcoming Testing
Our third and final iReady diagnostic test will be taking place March 26 and 27. This test helps our teachers see how students are doing with concepts and helps us predict how they will do on the MAP test. We take this test in a way that mimics the way we take the MAP test so it's like a practice round. We want students to do their best on this test so over the next couple weeks teachers are meeting with students to set goals and talk about how they can have the best chance at success. Parents will be able to get their student's results after the test.
