Hello Vernon Families and Friends,
Vernon Parent Teacher Conferences-
Conferences provide parents and teachers a wonderful chance to have a discussion about the current performance and needs of each child. At this meeting you will hear from the teacher how your child is doing in the academic areas of math, reading, writing, as well as other curricular areas. You will hear about your student’s areas of strength as well as areas that need continued work or improved effort.
This is a great time for you to ask questions and to work with the teacher to determine how you can support your child’s schooling at home. It is also a great time to ask questions about how your child’s needs are being met in terms of being provided sufficiently challenging materials, or necessary scaffolds to ensure success. It is imperative that both parent and teacher take the time to ask questions.
Once you have had the conference, don’t forget to discuss the conference with your child. Pass on the positive information first. Be specific about the areas where your child is doing well. If there is a problem area, put it in the context of all the positive aspects of your child's functioning in school. A great strategy is to let your child know that you and the teacher have worked out a plan to help them improve. It is important to seek your child's input in order to best understand their perception of how things are going and what they think they need to do to improve.
After a plan has been developed, it is important for the parent and teacher to check in after a reasonable amount of time to measure progress. Keep in mind that changes do not occur overnight. It is wise not to put too much pressure on your child, potentially making the situation worse. This is a great time for parents to make it clear to the child that doing well in school is a family value and that the teacher and parents are working together to help the child succeed. Conferences can be a powerful tool and a bridge between school and home.
