Picking up your student even an hour early means your student will miss an hour of instruction. Not only do students miss valuable learning, but it is disruptive to the class for students to be called to the office or arrive late. When possible, schedule appointments after school or on school holidays. We will call your student to the office when you arrive for pick up, not before, so please allow adequate time if leaving for an appointment. It is important to use your own phone number when signing your student out, not that of another parent or guardian. This is a safety issue that must be adhered to.

It is quick and easy to report an absence through Parent Connect. Just click on “Report an Absence” and the message will come directly to the attendance office. You may also call the office to clear your student’s absence.

Pursuant to California Education Code 48200, parents or guardians are responsible for sending students to school every day for the entire day. All absences and tardies must be cleared through the office within 5 days of the absence, and not through the student’s teacher. The office is not able to clear absences over 5 days. If your student will be absent from school for 5 to 10 days in a planned absence, please come to the office 1 week in advance to complete the independent study contract. If your student is gone less than 5 days, or return with assigned work not complete, the absences will be uncleared.

Open Enrollment Transfer Applications are available at the Office of Student Services and School Attendance (SSSA), at www.cusd.com , and at the Garfield office for those parents/guardians who desire to transfer their child(ren) to a school other than the school of residence. Open Enrollment applications for the 25-26 school year are due to the Garfield office by October 28, 2024. Open enrollment transfers are available only to students whose who home dwelling is within the District boundaries. As required by the California Education Code, parents/guardians cannot use the open enrollment transfer process for a transitional kindergartener or kindergarten child but must use the intra-district transfer process for their child’s kindergarten year. An open enrollment transfer may be requested for students enrolled in 1st – 12th grade.
