Supporting and Responding to Students' Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Needs
What Does This Guide Include?
*For Teachers
This guide prioritizes practices that are (a) designed
to promote students’ SEB growth, (b) consistent with
positive and proactive values, (c) free to implement
(e.g., not packaged programs), and (d) supported by
empirical evidence across contexts (e.g., elementary,
middle, and high schools; students from diverse
backgrounds and with diverse needs).

Supporting and Responding to Educators' Classroom PBIS Implementation Needs
What Does this Guide Include?
* For PBIS Leadership Teams
This guide combines (a) guidance for developing
systems to support educator use of evidence-based
classroom PBIS practices with (b) guidance on how
to use relevant data to inform district and school
leadership team decision-making about implementation
supports. The foundational logic for this guide is
derived from guidance in both implementation and
improvement science. Footnotes provide research
citations that support each system or data “step.”

Attendance: Prevention and Early Intervention
Keeping Ohio Students Present, Engaged and Supported
From 2020-2021 to 2021-2022, the statewide rate of students missing at least 10% of their instructional time due to absences increased by six percentage points to 30.2%. Chronic absenteeism has risen across nearly all grade levels, district types and student subgroups. In 2021-2022, the largest increases were in kindergarten and 12th grade. Students with disabilities and those from economically disadvantaged families also experienced substantially higher chronic absence rates.
Chronic absence is one of the key early warning indicators that schools and districts should track and monitor over the course of a school year to identify students, student groups and schools in need of intervention and support. Left unaddressed, chronic absence can translate into students having difficulty learning to read by the third grade, achieving in middle school and graduating from high school.
Here are four key steps for schools and districts to consider:
- Take a team approach to attendance and engagement (at both the district and school level)
- Recognize that students are more likely to attend when positive conditions for learning are in place
- Use a multi-tiered approach to support student attendance and engagement using attendance, behavior and academic data

Early Warning System Data Entry and Review Calendar
The Early Warning Intervention and Monitoring System Implementation Guide was
developed by the National High School Center, which is operated by American
Institutes for Research. This guide was adapted for Ohio by the Great Lakes
Comprehensive Center and College and Career Readiness and Success Center.
The Ohio Department of Education offers the guide to Ohio districts to support their
implementation of Early Warning Intervention and Monitoring Systems and help
them use data to support their students more effectively.

Find Your District on the Student Recovery Dashboard
Student Recovery Dashboard
The Ohio Department of Education published a new dashboard on the Future Forward Ohio webpage. The Student Recovery Dashboard is designed to provide a better understanding of Ohio’s students’ recovery from the impact of the pandemic.
The Student Recovery Dashboard displays publicly available data in an accessible format that enables users to easily benchmark student performance trends before the pandemic and beyond. The introductory page of the dashboard captures key indicators such as enrollment, graduation, K-3 on-track diagnostic trends, chronic absenteeism and proficiency scores. Tiles on the left of the dashboard enable users to take a deeper look at other contextual information, including Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund spending rate, Kindergarten Readiness Assessment data and early literacy. The dashboard allows for a statewide view, as well as the ability to sort by public district. A similar dashboard for community schools is in development.
The Student Recovery Dashboard illustrates many of the same trends documented in Data
