Family 2-24 through 2-28

From Mr. Dunham...
Our students and school had an exciting week last week. HRMS students have recently met with Mr. DeRight about elective choices for next school year, we had an amazing Special Olympics morning with a couple of our classes and their helpers, our Ag students continued to display their hard work at the fair, our basketball teams traveled to Neptune Middle and our competition cheer team showed off their amazing routine.
During this coming week, our 8th graders who are heading to Harmony High School will meet with their future counselors and our basketball teams will play in two games. Track and Field season is quickly approaching along with Girls Flag Football, not to mention all of the clubs we have occurring throughout the week.
Students, if you have not found a connection or activity at school, it's not too late. Check out the athletics and special interest clubs we're hosting. We'd love to see you join!
Harmony High School Course Selections
Harmony High School Counselors will be visiting our campus to talk with our 8th graders on Thursday, February 27 and Friday, February 28.

Black History Month on the Announcements
This week we will focus on some Florida facts. Did you know that Bethune Beach is an important place in Floridaβs Black history because it was the only beach in Volusia County where African Americans could go during segregation. Bethune Beach is located in New Smyrna and near Daytona. The beach was named after Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, a famous civil rights leader. Today, Bethune Beach is a peaceful place where everyone can enjoy the beautiful surroundings and remember its historical significance.
Mary McLeod Bethune was an amazing teacher and leader who helped many people. She was born in 1875 to parents who were once enslaved, but she worked hard and became a teacher. Mary started a school for African American girls in Florida, which later became Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach. She also worked with important leaders to make sure everyone had the chance to learn and succeed.
Jonathan Clarkson Gibbs was the first African American to be Floridaβs Secretary of State. He also helped start Floridaβs first public school system. Gibbs was born free in Philadelphia and worked hard to get an education. His efforts made a big difference in Floridaβs history.
Judge Joseph W. Hatchett was the first African American to serve on Floridaβs Supreme Court. He was known for being fair and wise. Judge Hatchett also served as a federal judge and worked to make sure everyone was treated equally. His work helped make the legal system better for all people.
