In addition to our monthly character trait and mindset, our RES students, families and staff will continue to practice acts of kindness all year long. Click here to view and print the kindness calendar for September. Paper copies of the kindness calendar have been sent home.

Medication
St. Mary’s County Public School System Staff, to include our School Nurses, are prohibited from providing or administering medication to any student attending St. Mary’s County Public Schools except in accordance with the Maryland State School Health Services Guidelines and the School Health Services Manual.
St. Mary’s County Public School System encourages the administration of medication at home.
- Timing of medication doses should be adjusted to occur either before or after school hours if medically appropriate.
- When there is medical necessity for a student to receive medication in school, safe and proper administration is essential.
Medication (to include OTC), with the exception of stock naloxone and auto-injector epinephrine, will not be kept or administered by school health services personnel without the receipt of a St. Mary’s County Public School’s Prescriber’s Medication Order Form or a Maryland State School Medication Administration Authorization Form (collectively referred to as Medication Order Form through this regulation).
- The form must be completed and signed by an authorized prescriber, as well as a parent/legal guardian, without deletion or alteration and must accompany medication to be administered.
- A stamp with the prescriber's signature is permitted; a printed name stamp alone is not acceptable.
- Please be sure to have a completed medication form and the prescribed medication in the original pharmacy packing to be delivered to the school by an adult.

RES INFORMATIONAL ITEMS
Student Handbook/Code of Conduct
Mrs. Batelka met with all students this past week to discuss the SMCPS Student Handbook and Code of Conduct.
A major focus of the presentation and discussion was that everyone has a "job" in our school. We discussed that our students' job is to "learn," and what it looks like when our students do their job.
- Students need to be responsible and attend school.
- Students need to be responsible and keep cell phones "off and away" in their backpacks.
- Students need to be responsible and help keep our school safe.
- Students need to be respectful and wear clothing and shoes that are not distracting and are safe.
- Students need to be respectful and follow our school-wide routines.
- Students need to be ready to learn when it's time to work.
Families are encouraged to review and discuss the presentation with their child(ren).
Lunch Snack Bar: Opening the Week of September 9th
Students will be able to purchase snacks beginning the Week of September 9th.
Students will be able to purchase snacks on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
In order to purchase snacks, students need to either have money in their My School Bucks Account for meals OR students may purchase snacks with cash. Families are encourage to discuss with students the snack options available and to consider placing additional funds in students' accounts to limit the need for students to bring money to school.
Attendance Matters
In order to participate in after-school activities or events a student must be in attendance for a half day of school.
A student is considered truant if a student is unlawfully absent from school for more than:
- 8 days in any marking period
- 15 days in any semester
- 20 days in a school year
A FULL DAY of attendance is defined as present for at least four hours of the school day whether it be a full day, an early dismissal day, or a late arrival day.
A HALF DAY of attendance is defined as present for at least two hours of the school day, but less than four hours.

When is Sick too Sick for School?
Students need to stay home when they are experiencing:
- A fever (over 100 degrees)
- Stomach symptoms involving vomiting or diarrhea
- Pink Eye
Students should be sent to school even with or when:
- Sniffles/Cough when there are no other symptoms
- Headaches that are mild
- Tummy Aches with no vomiting or diarrhea
- Medication (antibiotics) have been taken for a full 24 hours
While we may not always feel our best, it is important to attend school.
Regular attendance is crucial for learning success and personal growth. Being in school matters!
Safety & Security
All parents/guardians and community members must enter through the Main Office when coming to the school.
The Main Office Doors are locked at all times. Visitors may ring the doorbell to notify school staff of their presence. Please be patient as RES Staff are likely not standing by the door to open the Main Office Doors immediately.
When attending school events or meetings, all visitors must check-in through our Security System.
A valid ID is required at all times to attend events or meetings each time. We will also continue to proceed with ID verification, and the use of the visitor system, for all individuals visiting and remaining on site.
EXCEPTION: SCHOOL-WIDE EVENTS such as evening events.
