Phone and Social Media Use During Class Time
As we head into second quarter, we are noticing a trend of many students distracted by their phones and also on social media during class time. This has also included incidents of taking pictures or video of staff or other students, which is a violation of the student handbook and could lead to consequences. Many teachers have the phone pockets in their classrooms, which we may be using more broadly across the building to help students manage their phone use. This is quite widespread among area schools and, in part, a symptom of the pandemic and attending school remotely with students having easy and regular access to their cellphones. Please encourage your student to keep their phone in their backpack during class instructional time. Check out this NY Times article about the impact of cellphones and social media on teen mental health here.
