Students who have been exposed to violence, crime, or abuse often come to school the next day tired, hungry and with incomplete homework as a result of traumatic experiences from the night before. DCSD’s Handle With Care program is a trauma-informed way to provide context for teachers and counselors while maintaining student and family privacy. The program strives to support all students and enables law enforcement to alert schools with a student’s name and three words: “Handle With Care.” No other information is divulged as the student/family experience is confidential. Administration, mental health professionals, teachers and other school staff who regularly work with the student receive the Handle With Care notice and are able to support with sensitivity and understanding so that personal and educational journeys can continue to positively grow. This program is another component in creating a safe and supportive school environment and ultimately prevent suicide and violence. Check out DCSD's Mental Health Resources
