November is Family Literacy Month
Families help their children learn and grow every day. This parent-friendly magazine provides effective and easy strategies to promote reading throughout a child’s early years. The magazine is available in English and Spanish and includes a monthly calendar of activities to do with your child.

We are starting a spelling bee club at Steele School for 2nd - 4th graders! This is an honor as these students scored in the top 20% for reading at the beginning of this school year. They will work on spelling and vocabulary skills. Amanda Weedman will run this as part of her duties as Spelling Bee coordinator. 29 students are being invited and it will run on Tuesdays. The first meeting is Tuesday, November 19, 2024, 3:45-4:45 p.m. and runs through December. Permission slips will go home next week to selected students.
19 Ways to Help Elementary Students Self-Regulate
School is all about giving students the skills they need to succeed. That certainly applies to reading, writing, and math, but students also need the fundamental skill of self-regulation. These tips can easily be used at home too when emotions are big and children are having trouble managing their feelings.
“I found that thinking about behavior objectively—as a skill to be taught rather than simply as good or bad—was immensely helpful in my ability to guide children in learning to control their behavior,” ...........

Pictures From Last Week
Chloe spent her dojo points from Miss Eager's 3rd Grade classroom to spend some time as a principal in training. She was a natural!
We started a safety patrol during lunch and lunch recess. The student helpers have been so responsible!
We welcomed almost 200 families to our Family Reading Night. We had a variety of activities to choose from and a free dinner. All students got to leave with a new book!
Miss Cooper's first graders practiced writing a dictated sentence.
It is a tradition for students in Ms. Laurin's second-grade class to hold a candy election and this year the "Candy Dates" were Skittles and Feastables!
Students were asked to bring in their favorite candy wrapper and then the class held a primary election to decide what two candies would be up against each other in the election. The two candy wrappers are separated into two parties and students are then asked to choose sides.
Once students selected the party they wanted to support they worked together to determine the pros and cons of each candy date. The students then worked on their speeches and it was time to get on the campaign trail!
Speeches were made at each second-grade classroom and all students were given an official ballot to cast their choice for the best second-grade candy.
And the winner is....both candies received the same amount of votes, making it a tie! For more photos, visit: https://www.galesburg205.org/article/1858850

How do we grade at the elementary level? We use a standards-based report card instead of a report card with letter grades. Elementary report cards are issued at the end of each grading period. They are intended to give an evaluation of the scholastic achievement and work habits of each child. Parents should examine all cards carefully since each child is rated not only on academic progress, but also progress in development of social attitudes and work habits.
We use a 4,3,2,1 system to assess a student's mastery of standards.
4 = Exceeding State and District Standards
3 = Meeting State and District Standards
2 = Approaching State and District Standards
1 = Not Meeting State and District Standards
