Science Class 🔭🧪🔬
Making Connections to Learning
Kreeger Science Students are always encouraged to connect to the concepts we are learning, whether through discussions in class or extra credit projects at home. Every grade level has things they can do - ask your student what some choices are for their grade level! Options are also posted in Google Classroom and came home in a paper newsletter in December. One of our amazing 5th graders, Austin Hoisington, created a plastic waste awareness outfit to connect with one of our learning focuses. The idea is to build your own awareness as well as to create awareness amongst others about the amount of plastic waste we have in our homes, our community, and our world.
Always an adventure! - Ms. Gill 🙂
Physical Education 🏀🏐🏈⚽
During PE class, students begin to work on striking with a short-handed implement (pickleball paddle, badminton racket, and/or tennis racket). Students will work on teamwork, body control, boundary lines, rallies, backhand/forehand striking, and the force needed to apply to an object.
Students will continue demonstrating their ability to work with others to accomplish the task given for the activity or game. Students are encouraged to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses for any skill, activity, or game to continue to see improvements and successes in themselves.

Art Class🎨✍🏻
February
All classes have completed an overview of the Elements of Art, so now we look for them in the artworks we discuss.
3rd Graders are continuing their study of color and learning to mix secondary colors, tints, and shades while doing a painting of vases.
4th Graders are completing their 3-dimensional drawings of interiors based on the work of Canadian artist Matthew Wong. Next up, they will begin a winter-themed watercolor painting.
5th Graders are finishing their 1 pt. perspective colored pencil drawings to practice creating the illusion of space, and will soon be studying tints and shades and creating a torn paper landscape based on the work of Ted Harrison.

Music Class🎹🎵🎼
During the month of January, students in music class studied the group Simple Plan and listened to songs such as What's New, Scooby Doo? and I'm Just a Kid. The 3rd grade classes have been practicing for their upcoming concert in music class by learning several different songs related to jungle animals. The 4th graders have been continuing to practice the recorder and have most recently learned to play Hot Cross Buns and Eye of the Tiger. Lastly, the 5th graders have begun a research project on their favorite musical artist or band and have spent time filling out a brochure with the information they have gathered.

Social Studies📜📚
In Third Grade, Social Studies students are learning how Native people of Michigan adapted to and modified their environments. Soon we'll be learning about traditional stories of the Three Fires Tribes of Michigan.
In Fourth Grade, we are learning how human migration contributed to the population of the new state of Michigan. We will be delving into how the Erie Canal was a pivotal event in the growth of Michigan, and how natural resources determined the locations of towns and cities.
Fifth Graders are learning about the technological and political developments that made sea exploration possible. We will then be learning about the convergence of Europeans, Indigenous Peoples, and Africans in the Americas after 1492.

Third Grade News
In third grade, we are continuing to build strong foundations in both math and reading this month! Mastering multiplication facts is a key focus, and practicing these facts at home will help boost math confidence and problem-solving speed. In reading, we’re working on improving fluency, so regular reading practice aloud at home makes a big difference. Additionally, iReady lessons are a fantastic way for students to reinforce and personalize their learning. Just 20-30 minutes a few times a week can help your child strengthen essential skills, build confidence, and develop a love for learning.
3rd and 5th grade Math Buddies
Mrs. Atkinson’s 3rd grade and Mrs. Volz’s 5th grade classes playing math games together. The 5th grade students had so much fun teaching the 3rd graders a new math game. The 3rd graders were so excited to meet new older friends!!
Fourth Grade News
January has been a productive time in 4th grade! Between goal setting and snow days we have been very busy. In math we are focused on fractions and decimals as our kids use many manipulatives like egg cartons and geoboards to better understand fractions. Writing has been all about informational text. We are learning the importance of salt in our world and history and the students will be writing an article about salt. The reading unit we are in is centered around technology. Students are learning about cool tech inventions and improvements. We are also learning about student inventors.
Fifth Grade News
Fifth-grade students have several fun opportunities for February. This past Friday, the KPTN supplied hot cocoa to the students and staff at Kreeger, and it was greatly appreciated. The week of Friday, February 14th, will be filled with Valentine's Parties, Candy Grams, decorating, and fundraising for Motts Children’s Hospital.
We have also sent home the transportation note for our Greenfield Village field trip in June. If a student is riding the bus, those seats must be paid for by the 18th. We will offer the tickets for sale for entry later in April.
Unit 3 math on decimals will come to an end by mid-February. The Unit 2 Magnetic Reading chapter on Art in America will too. In writing, classes have just started assembling a first draft of their legend.
Hot Chocolate Day!
Special thanks to our Kreeger Parent/Teacher Network for providing hot chocolate to all of our students and staff in celebration of National Hot Chocolate Day! It was delicious!

Also, we will be selling Valentine’s Day suckers the week of February 10th to raise funds to donate to Mott Children's Hospital. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to send sweet messages to friends and staff while supporting a great cause!
