Dear Mission Families,

Ms. Akao, Mission's new Assistant Principal and I welcome all our families and students to the 2023-2024 school year! It's exciting to see our new and continuing students confidently adjust to their new classroom and connect with their teacher. A great thing about starting the new school year is that students will get to meet and make new friends. They get to share ideas and experiences and they can't wait to share their experiences with you, their parents.

Sleep is essential for both kids and you, their parents. But sleep schedules can vary in the summer when school is out. Thank you for establishing routines at home to help your students get the rest they need to keep going the whole school year, have great school attendance, and arrive to school on time. As a reminder, tomorrow, August 21, we begin regular school hours for students in preschool, and grades 1-5. For the next two weeks, students in TK and Kindergarten will participate in enrichment rotations from 12:25-2:00pm. Parents may opt to pick up students in TK and Kindergarten at 12:25pm or at 2:10pm. Please inform your child's teacher if you choose to pick up TK or Kindergarten students at 12:25.

We need your support. If you have not yet completed your scholar's Data Confirmation, we need you to do so by Wednesday, August 23. Please note this is important for all scholars enrolled in school, Preschool through 5th grade. To complete your scholar's Data Confirmation, please log in to your parent portal.

All meals will continue to be offered at no cost to all scholars. This year, however, students will learn and use their lunch number for accountability purposes. Please practice learning your student's ID number with them. This helps our lunch lines move more swiftly.

We highly recommend that you purchase device insurance.

Students will be taking beginning of the year online assessments in both reading and math. These assessments help us determine how we can best meet the needs of our students. Thank you for your support in ensuring your students bring their devices and chargers daily.

Did you know that each school site has a designated Foster and Transitional Youth Liaison?

At Mission Elementary, our Foster and Transitional Liaison is Chantel Rothenburger (aka Ms. R) the Community School Coordinator. Ms. R can assist families in finding out if they are eligible with those programs, ensuring they have the proper paperwork documented and providing connection with students in the form of checks in and needed resources.

Our school was selected to be the beneficiary of dd's Discounts. Youth Literacy Fundraiser. This fundraiser will provide new books for our school and is taking place now through August 27th. To participate all you do is make your donation for Mission School at dd's Discounts located at 1527 Mission Avenues, Suite A, Oceanside. The OUSD Board of Education approved a District Policy that prohibits dogs on campus, for the safety and health of all our students and staff. Thank you for understanding this change and please for not bringing dogs to our campus during or after school hours. Please visit our office should you have appropriate documentation for a service dog.
