I hope everyone had a good Labor Day and the holiday made for a short school week. It looks like the high temperatures will subside and give is a fabulous weekend. While enjoying the cooler temperatures stop by the Riley's Dance Marathon car wash. Details are below. Congratulations to Avery Dedrick and Mrs. Brittany Maners for their selection as the JHS Student and Staff of the Week. This Sunday, September 8 marks the first annual National 988 Day. To recognize this important day, we'd love your help in spreading the word about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in Indiana. On October 9th students will either be taking national test or participating in a job shadow, community service, or college visit. Please see the Guidance section for details. Student Council held homecoming elections. Congratulations to our court members. StuCo will sponsor the class hallway decorating competition during homecoming week. There will be a call out for all bowlers at Eastown Lanes on 9/9 at 5:30 for participants and parents. IU will hold a Science Fest with information in their flyer. There are also several other community events listed below.

Seniors and their parents this is just a reminder that if you are interested in the college fair hosted at Southridge on 9/24, you need to fill out a permission slip and turn it into Ms. Betz in the guidance office. She has extra copies there. This permission slip must be turned in by 8:00 a.m. a week in advance on Tuesday, 9/17, so you can attend. Please let me know if you have questions. The list of booths participating is below:
JHS German Exchange Program still needs hosts for five boys coming from our partner school in Germany. The dates of their stay are September 23rd through October 11th. Exchange students need a bed (not necessarily their own room), food, and transportation to and from school. Juniors planning on attending Prom you will need to sign up to work ONE home basketball game to fulfill this prom fundraising requirement. Here is the link to sign up for one game of sales. Juniors working one basketball game will fulfill this fundraising opportunity and save $40!

We MUST have a signed permission slip for each Sophomore, Junior, and Senior for October 9. Please encourage your student to get this turned into the guidance office as soon as possible.
There will be a College Fair at Southridge High School on September 24 from 1-3pm. Any Junior or Senior is welcome to attend. They will be responsible for their own transportation and will need to turn in a signed permission slip.

BOOK BANTER FROM YOUR LIBRARY
This is a busy month in the library celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and Constitution Day! Feel free to check out any of the books in the respective displays! There is also a memorial display for the 9-11 World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks.
New books continue to arrive! Check the table near the center window for a new selection. If you want to see a book in our library not currently available, see SJB to add it to our wishlist. We completed another collaborative poster. View it on the copy room door.
Java and Jargon book club will meet on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. in the library. There are many things to discuss and we can enjoy the new coffee maker!! We look forward to seeing you in the library!
Submission to the arts magazine, The Paws, will be accepted all during the school year this year. Bring in a hard copy to the library, or email a copy of your outstanding work to sburns@gjcs.k12.in.us.
There are coloring sheets, a puzzle, word games, a checker/chess board, and loads of new bookmarks and books!
September’s drawing will be to submit a blackout poetry page from those pages available at the circulation desk.

Clubs & Organizations
BPA (Business Professionals of America) will be having a call-out meeting during Homeroom on Friday, September 6th in the LGI. If you are unable to attend, please see Mrs. Schipp in Room 602. Dues must be paid by Wednesday, September 11th.
Key Club
Our first Key Club meeting will be Friday, September 13th in the LGI during homeroom! We are very excited about all of our volunteering opportunities!
If a student is interested in being on the Key Club Leadership Team this year, please stop by Mrs. Kennedy’s room (204), and pick up an application for these positions. The due date for the application is Monday, August 26th.
Join us this year for intramural volleyball! Games will be held on Wednesday evenings in September and October beginning at 6:00pm. You must have a team of at least 4 people to play. You can sign up outside of Mrs. Clark's room #411. Any questions, email Mrs. Clark aclark@gjcs.k12.in.us
Spell Bowl Team
Our first Spell Bowl meeting will be held Monday, September 9th in room 204 during homeroom! Be sure to attend to pick up materials and learn more about our annual competition. The Spell Bowl competition will take place after school on Monday, November 4th. Students must be able to attend this event.
Interact Club is a student-led service club for those who are passionate about making a difference while learning about the world and themselves. And having fun! We will do two service projects this school year for our school or community.

Here are a few community events of interest.
On behalf of the Purdue University Women in Engineering Program, I wanted to share information with you regarding a free college campus visit opportunity. The engineering-focused event is called Exploring Engineering at Purdue and is geared toward young women in their junior and/or senior year of high school.
Students who register will enjoy a comprehensive, full-day engineering experience on Monday, October 14, 2024. An optional ‘meet and greet’ on Sunday, October 13, will be offered with extended opportunities to speak directly with engineering clubs and majors. Parents or guardians are encouraged to attend on both dates.

The Heartland Half Marathon Weekend is almost here!
Join us Friday, September 20th for the Kids Fun Run and Tailgate. Festivities will take place on the square in Downtown Jasper. Children ages 4-14 can register for the 1.1 Mile Kids Fun Run online by visiting the event website at heartlandhalfmarathon.com. A procession led by the JHS Band and Dance Team will travel from the Kids Fun Run to the Jasper Home Football Game in time for kickoff! Don't miss out on this exciting event.
Complete the Kids Run Challenge by participating in the 12-mile challenge over the course of the next few weeks. Participants can print the Running Log below and track 12 miles prior to September 20th. Participants will be entered to win cool prizes! The Heartland Kids Fun Run and Tailgate kicks off the fun-filled, family weekend of events with the Heartland Half Marathon, 5k, and Team Challenge taking place on the next morning, Saturday, September 21st.
