DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION - INFORMATION WILL CONTINUE TO BE UPDATED
Democratic National Convention and Secret Service Security Notice
On Thursday, July 25, the Committee on Public Safety held a Hearing to discuss safety measures for the Democratic National Convention (DNC). At the Hearing, we heard from Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling, Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Department of Transportation, OEMC, the Mayor’s Office, and many other City Departments. Please click hereto listen to the Hearing.
Please note, increased local security measures will be in place around Chicago’s United Center and McCormick Place in the days leading up to, during, and immediately following the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
The U.S. Secret Service, in conjunction with Federal, state, and local partners, released maps of security perimeters that will be in-place around both venues during the upcoming convention in Chicago, which runs from August 19 through August 22.
Starting Friday, August 16 at 10pm, temporary road closures and enforcement of pedestrian and vehicle security perimeters will be in effect around McCormick Place. Additionally, beginning Saturday, August 17 at 7pm, similar restrictions will be in-place near the United Center. DNC security measures will be in-place through Friday, August 23.
The secure areas for the event are divided into a Vehicle Screening Perimeter and a Pedestrian Restricted Perimeter. The maps below show both perimeters for each venue.
Please visit OEMC’s website for more information and to sign up for OEMC alerts to stay up to date.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH OUR LANDSCAPING
Our landscaper, Scott Byron will manage pruning and trimming shrubs and perennials. They also have to replace some plants that have been damaged by chemicals and dogs. That will happen in the cooler months. Meanwhile, weeds are taking over the landscaping on the east and south sides of the church. If you can spend 30 minutes or so weeding on those two sides of the church, it would be greatly appreciated. We have our second and final wedding coming up this year and Scott, his landscaping crew, Marco and the wedding committee need our help weeding so we can look our best again. If you think you will be able to help with this, please let Jeremy Nichols or Erik Flom, who moderate Facilities know.
For the last 5 years, I have volunteered my time, money and knowledge as a Master Gardener to add seasonal, appropriate plants to all our planters, decorated for Christmas and our Easter holidays, weeded, cleaned up the trash, fertilized the plants in the planters, pruned, trimmed all the bushes and added mulch when needed but unfortunately, I don't live as close to the church as I use to. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated by me and those who have also volunteered all these years - Amy Haack
BARBARA'S BASEMENT
The shop is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays, 10 am – 1 pm. Barbara's Basement will also be open on the First Sunday of each month from 12:30 - 2:00pm.
Barbara will also open at 10am on Saturday, August 24 to accommodate any shoppers who are also participating in the blood drive.
Stop by and take a look at all the new items that have been added.
Barbara’s Basement is looking for committed volunteers. Please contact Barbara Floyd at (312) 485-0362 or email her at BarbFloyd36@gmail.com.
SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH TREASURER'S REPORT YTD TO JUNE 30th, 2024
Second Presbyterian Church
- Net Income at $3,494.29 is $32,922.29 BETTER than plan.
- Member Giving was $2,717.22 behind plan, Non-Member Giving was $12,421.90 behind plan.
- Three or four major Non-Member donors from 2023 have not made gifts in 2024. I recommend that we write to these individuals to bring them up to date in the life of the church. Stewardship?
- Building Use Revenue was $3,611.90 above plan, but we have not yet received compensation from Historymakers for use of the parking lot.
- We have only two weddings booked for this year so far. It turns out that the Wedding pages on our website has not been functioning for most of this year.
- Overall, Revenue was $3,893 behind plan.
- While not yet having a Called Pastor is clearly a bad thing, the saving of not having a Pastoral Salary produced a Compensation expense that was $34,069.82 better than plan.
- Building Aide Expense was $2,217.00, worse than plan with more building use than expected.
- Facility Operations were $3,506.68 worse than planned. All our major operating expenses other than Repairs were better than plan. The deficit in repairs is related to invoices for the masonry repairs currently underway. This extraordinary expense was approved by Session earlier in the year. This issue will become worse as we pay more invoices. Please expect at least another $109,000 related to the south elevation windows, masonry, roof repairs and the Wiss Janney inspection of the building shell last month.
For the longer term our goals MUST include significant increases in membership and attendance. Facilities has begun to develop a plan to raise $1,000,000 to support needed building repairs over the next four years.

As weather permits, the doors will be in the open position during the hours for service.
THE TIFFANY MOUNT OF THE HOLY CROSS RETURNS IN JULY
Tiffany’s Mount of the Holy Cross window will be returning to Historic Second Church this summer. Venturella Studio has completed the restoration work of this 1901 unique Tiffany window. The work to prepare the window opening to receive the restored Tiffany window started recently. New interior and exterior frames will be installed. The exterior masonry holding the window will be inspected and any cracks repaired. During the week of July 22, 2024, the window will be reinstalled.
Plan to stop by on July 23rd or 24th to see the reinstallation in progress. Prepare to be amazed at what will be revealed with 120 years of dirt and grime removed.
This project is fully funded by Friends of Historic Second Church.
RECENTLY WE BEGAN TO SEE THE SCAFFOLDING BEING INSTALLED INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CHURCH FOR THE RESTORED WINDOW TO BE INSTALLED.
