Falcon Flyer for Families!
January 6-10, 2024
Welcome Back!
Hello Falcon Families!
We hope that you had an enjoyable break and that you are ready to return to school! Teachers met on Friday and spent the day reviewing data, creating lesson plans, and collaborating with colleagues. It was a full day, and we are thankful we had the time to meet and plan. We are excited and ready to kick off Semester 2!
Starting Monday, we will have the same routine as in the fall. Students should arrive on campus by bus or car starting at 7:45. Students will be offered breakfast, and then 6th grade will wait in the Auditorium and 7th/8th will wait in the gym until they are escorted to class around 8:05. Students are tardy at 8:15.
As we enter the winter season, we ask that students dress appropriately for the weather. For example, Monday's forecast calls for rain, and the lows next week are expected to be in the 20s with highs in the 40s. Coats, gloves, and hats are recommended. As students arrive on campus, all outerwear, including hoodies, will be placed in lockers for the school day. We encourage students to wear long sleeves and sweatshirts underneath their outerwear so that they are comfortable in the hallways and classrooms as tempuratures will vary throughout the building.
*Homework begins and will run Mondays-Thursdays.

Important!
Homework--Monday through Thursday Beginning January 7!!
As part of Sullivan's plan to increase math achievement, students will be given a number of math problems to work on nightly (Monday-Thursday). Math practice can be accomplished through the IXL program and/or through a homework sheet that will be provided by teachers for those without a tablet or mobile device with internet access. The nightly practice is meant to reinforce skills, and at the same time provide you, as parent, the opportunity to see and ask questions about what your child is learning;
Each grade level and team will have incentives for the weekly completion of the homework. Some teams will include ELA practice, as well, so please check team newsltters to find out more about homework expectations and incentives.
Math Notes
Starting in January, our math department will move to aligned expectations regarding math notebooks! All math classes will utilize composition books in which they take outlined notes and examples. While we know there are great apps and electronic ways to take notes, handwriting notes supports engagement, comprehension, and memory. Students will be able to take the notebooks home, if needed, but they must be responsible for bringing them to class on a daily basis.
IXL--Math Practice at your Fingertips!
Sullivan has a subscription to the IXL platform for math. IXL is a resource in which teachers create individualized math skill plans for students based on their MAP performance and perceived gaps in learning. Questions are aligned to state standards, and students are to practice problems daily. If used as expected, students should be able to master, or become proficient in, one math skill per week.
Please encourage your student to practice math daily. IXL can be accessed from home just through signing in to his/her account.
To practice IXL online, students can sign in through Launchpad, or on a tablet or electronic device.
From Launchad, click on the IXL icon.
https://launchpad.classlink.com/rockhill
The login for launchpad username: the first and last initials capitalized then the lunch number (ex: JP55555). Password is the birthdate.
For IXL, every student has a skill plan to work on that's based on individual needs. If the student does not go through Launchpad and their official login, then the IXL modules will be generic and not based on individual skill needs.
Please make sure that your student is practicing math skills at home or in the car. The time to complete these lessons should take no more than 20 minutes a night.
Semester 1 Report Cards, MAP Reports, and Goals!
As promised, coming home on Monday, January 13 will be Semester 1/Quarter 2 Report Cards. Attached to the Report Cards will be MAP Family Reports which illustrate your student's performance on the Winter assessment. Also, it will includes a note outlining your student's achievement goals for April MAP and May SCReady. Please review these important reports and discuss with your student his or her strategies and action steps for achieving their best and ending the year strong!
>>Please return the signature sheet with your signature by Friday, January 13.
Please reach out to your child's team, counselor and administrator with any questions you may have. We would love the opportunity to work with you in creating an action plan to help your student!

Students who earned Winter MAP growth will earn lunch with a friend and canteen time Thursday, January 16 for ELA and Friday, January 17 for Math. Scores and goal sheets will be sent home with Report Cards.
