The Little Judges' Docket
News from VACDES for the Week of October 7 - October 11
A Message from Dr. Pluska
What a fantastic Lunch on the Lawn! Thank you to everyone for attending. I know it took a while to pull it off, but we finally got it. Students are bringing home two important pieces of information. The VALLSS report (updated PALS testing) and tutoring forms. The VALLSS report will let you know if your student is at risk for developing reading difficulties. The letter attached will explain the testing and report. If you have questions, please make sure you reach out to your student's teacher. Some children are also bringing home tutoring forms. We are offering after school tutoring with bus transportation on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 4pm starting October 15th. Please fill out the form and return it by Wednesday, October 9th so we can finalize transportation. The tutoring days will also help with attendance recovery. If your student stays for tutoring, each 2 hours of tutoring counts as 1 day of attendance recovery.
Literacy Night is this week on October 10th at 5:30pm at Daniel Morgan. Come join us for fun activities and snacks all with a camping theme!
If you are interested in your child biking to school with a trusted adult, make sure you fill out the bike bus papers and send back in to school.
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month - we celebrate from Sept 16th to Oct. 15th. We will have several activities for students during the days at school. Please see the flyer for the clap out on Friday!
Car Riders: Please do not enter the parking lot until after 2:10pm to make sure all of our students have come in from recess and are safe crossing the parking lot. We also need to make sure that we are following our guidelines for students of being safe, kind, and responsible.
Information from Winchester City: Due to the necessity to replace the existing old water and sewer pipes, Winchester City will be closing National Avenue to through traffic from the traffic circle at the Timbrook Police Station to the intersection with North Pleasant Valley Road (see attached map). The project will begin September 3, 2024 and should take about 4 months. Please be aware we anticipate travel disruptions for WPS bus transportation. Woodstock Lane will be established as the detour route during the project for through traffic. We appreciate your patience as we navigate this disruption to schedules and the associated traffic.
Please make sure you have signed into your parent portal and completed the annual verification forms. Part of that is to make sure your child can be issued a Chromebook to use at school, without the agreement your student cannot be issued a Chromebook which we use for testing and instruction.
Just a reminder that announcements are at 7:45am so we can begin instruction right at 7:50am.
Thank you as always for your support for our school. We need to work together as a community to make our students successful because we are creating Local leaders today - Global leaders tomorrow!

Academics
Literacy Night is this week on October 10th at 5:30pm at Daniel Morgan Campus. It will be a fun camping experience with snacks and activities.
We will have a new report card this year. Please take a look at the flyer attached so you can see the changes. Your children should be bringing home information on literacy for the first 9 weeks.
VALLS reports and student summaries are coming home. Please be on the lookout. We will also be talking about the Reading Plans that we are required to do for each child that is at a high risk for learning to read. Also be on the lookout for the tutoring forms for some of our students.
Attendance
Our attendance protocol this year is for a phone call home if a student is absent. As we miss more than 3 days, we will send letters, request meetings, and set up an attendance plan. Attendance is so important. If a student misses even one day a month, they will be considered chronic absentee. Please make sure that your child is at school unless they have a fever or are throwing up. Of course if they are sick, they need to stay home. Please send a note to school if they are absent. We will be having our monthly Perfect Attendance celebrations again this year. Students also receive PBIS points for coming to school.
PBIS/Behavior
Our first big PBIS Event of the year will be our Fall Festival on October 11th. Students will be able to use the points they have earned for following rules to attend. We have PBIS celebrations every quarter for the students that are earning points for being safe, kind, and responsible.
Every day on the announcements we will be talking about the three school wide rules -
- Keep hands and feet to self and use kind words;
- Stay in your assigned area; and
- Follow directions quickly and quietly.
