Athena's 2024 Cultural Fest
Thank you all for making this year's Cultural Fest a success!
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual Cultural Fest at Athena! It was a wonderful day of coming together on the lawn to share in delicious food and desserts from around the world, provided by our amazing families and friends. We were treated to spectacular performances and entertainment from talented members of the Athena community.
Special thanks go to the Bateristas Do Coração drum troupe, which includes our Primary 2 Lead Guide, Lisa Miele, and to Ballet Folklorico Maricruz, including Tots 3 Lead Guide Alicia Ramirez, along with their dancers and organizers, for their incredible performances. We're also grateful to Athena P3 parent Colleen Kepner and her coaches from Texas Ultimate Summer Camp for bringing ultimate frisbee to the event and providing a fun activity for all to enjoy.
A big thank you as well to our dedicated staff and parent volunteers who helped with decorations, set-up, clean-up, greeted guests, worked the ticket tables, and assisted at the food stations. Your hard work and enthusiasm made this event such a success!
We appreciate everyone who attended and helped make this community celebration unforgettable. And don't forget—mark your calendars for our annual Casino Night fundraiser this spring, coming up on March 1st! More details to follow...
In support of Communities in Schools, Athena Montessori is hosting a coat drive this month until December 13th. Communities in Schools works directly with over 100 campuses in Central Texas. Their social service professionals provide individual and whole-school support; empowering Austin's most vulnerable students to stay in school and succeed in life. Athena is accepting new and clean, gently used coats through December 13th.
Athena Celebrates
Our classrooms invited families who celebrate Diwali to share the festivities with us, and we were lucky to have several wonderful families take part across our entire campus! The children had the opportunity to learn about the traditions of the holiday and enjoy stories that explored the significance of Diwali.
Some of our visitors included Inaya's family in P3, coming during group time and read a book about the celebration of Diwali. They also brought diyas as gifts for everyone in the class! In P4, Ahaan's family visited during circle time and brought in some decorations they use when celebrating Diwali in their home, as well as some pictures and a book to share with the class.
Many thanks to the Gupta, Mital, Shetty and Buhlani families who participated in celebrating Diwali with our community last month, sharing their traditions and stories to make the joyous occasion truly special.

Do you want to structure your thinking about the kind of school that would be best suited to your child's personality and needs?
Come to our parent education event "Schooling Beyond Athena Montessori: Exploring Educational Options for the Elementary Years" with Nora Deveny-Valiela. Nora is a certified Montessori elementary guide who has worked in a variety of educational settings and has toured a multitude of primary and elementary schools in the Austin area. Support Casa Marianella
One of our own Athena families, Ashley Hareen and Ryan Bollom have let us know their architecture firm, Low Design Office, is involved in designing a new community dwelling, garden, and playscape for Casa Marianella. Casa is a non-profit that provides essential shelter and support for immigrants and refugees, and this new project will create much-needed shared family spaces for their Posada campus, serving exclusively women and children. The design weaves multi-cultural sensibilities through spaces and materials, creating a flexible, resilient project that over time will represent “home” for diverse groups of women and children.
Want to help make this new community home a reality? Grab your tickets to this all-star concert with reasonably priced tickets. A Concert for Casa takes place on December 9th at ACL Live at the Moody. The lineup is stellar and proceeds will help make this project a reality. Buy your tickets, invite some friends, and have fun doing good this season!
Books Of the Month
The Giving Snowman, written by Julia Zheng, and illustrated by Graziella Miligi. This simple story of giving and gratitude told through the interactions of woodland animals, a couple of people and a snowman shows children how kindness really does count.
Wintercake, written and illustrated by Lynn Rae Perkins. Perkins is a Newberry medalist and New York Times bestselling author/illustrator. Wintercake is about thinking the best of those around you, mistakes as the start of something wonderful, and holiday traditions. Look out for the recipe hiding under the back flap! Lovely to share with all Athena-aged children.
For child’s eye view of how people celebrate holidays and how, we have 2 books for you:
Our Favorite Day of the Year, written by A.E. Ali and illustrated by Rahele Jomepour Bell. We are over the moon for the illustrations in this wonderful story of kindergarten friendships and differences, written in a way that 4 to 7 year old children will relate to. It will be especially interesting to our kindergarten students, though, because all the characters are in kindergarten together. This is sure to become a staple in all the Athena primary classrooms.
We All Celebrate, written by Chitra Soundar and illustrated by Jenny Bloomfield. This brightly illustrated book shows children that every month around the world, people somewhere are celebrating something special. Full of captivating illustrations for all ages, the facts are interesting and everyone in the family will learn something: adults, too!
For our youngest book lovers, board books are a must for independent enjoyment. Here are four that are sure to please our literary connoisseurs who actually eat their books:
Flip Flop Hanukkah, written by Danny Paller and illustrated by Aya Gordon-Noy. With its rhyming prose and illustrations of very young children, all the little ones will enjoy learning about the festival of lights.
My First Kwanzaa ABC Picture Book by MadGaviette Publishing is for babies and toddlers doing their first learnings about what a joyous Kwanzaa means, in their families, or their friends’ families.
Happy New Year Spot, written and illustrated by Eric Hill. Toddlers will find themselves in the same spot as “Spot”, too young to stay up til midnight on New Year’s Eve, but still celebrating with their family.
Antlers With Candles, written by Chris Barash and illustrated by Melissa Iwai. This gem follows a curious tot through the house at Hanukkah time, tipping over the latkes, making antlers out of the menorah and learning along the way about traditions.
A Christmas tale for ages 5 through 8, Grandma’s Gift, by Eric Velasquez recalls a day the author spent with his Grandma, a day that changed everything.
My Family Celebrates Kwanzaa, written by Lisa Bullard and illustrated by Constanza Basaluzzo is part of the Early Bird Stories series “My Family Celebrates…” There are six books in the holiday series, all fun, informative, and affirming.
The Twelve Days of Christmas gets a modern makeover in A Piñata In A Pine Tree: A Latino Twelve Days of Christmas, written by Pat Mora and illustrated by Magalay Morales. Fun for everyone!
So often, it is difficult to find diverse family make-up represented in children’s books. Three cheers for these two titles!
Over the River and Through the Wood: A Holiday Adventure written by Linda Ashman and illustrated by Kim Smith follows the old song to grandmother’s house, but with lots of fun along the way, and families that give windows and mirrors to all our children. This sing-song book will be fun for everyone at home.
The Christmas Truck, written by JB Blankenship and illustrated by Cassandre Bolan. Can Papa, Dad, and retired Fire Chief Grandma save Christmas for a family they’ve never even met? Find out in this fun holiday romp for ages 4 to 6.
