Pleasant Hill News
May 24, 2024
Greetings, Pleasant Hill Families,
As a reminder, there will be NO SCHOOL this Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. We owe a debt of gratitude to our servicemen and servicewomen who have paid the ultimate price serving our great nation. We thank them, and each of their families, for their service and sacrifice.
Wishing you all a wonderful long weekend,

Springtime Help Needed
Pleasant Hill Families we need your HELP!
We would like to repair the outdoor picnic tables at our school to make them safe for our students again (no more splinters).
This would require completely sanding the picnic tables and then sealing them.
If you are willing to help the PTA organize this, please fill out this survey:
https://forms.gle/PDitJwk2JsiQhrNS8
Thank you for considering this volunteer opportunity to help beautify and preserve the PH picnic tables!

Thanks to Mr. Martelle and Mrs. Chaples
Music and Art Celebrations
Last week, students showed off their artistic and musical talents in a whole school assembly. Please enjoy this video of the children sharing their sock puppets and beautiful singing voices. Thanks to Mr. Martelle and Mrs. Chaples for guiding this work and leading our assembly!
Thanks, Mrs. Chaples, as well, for hosting the Clay Art Gallery. Grade 2 students enjoyed displaying their creative clay art, and welcoming parents and family members to check out their work! See the photos below...
Thanks, PTA!
Thanks to our amazing PTA for sponsoring Fiddlehead's "Tinkerbus" visit to second grade. This week, second graders had the opportunity to create their own working lighthouses, to augment their study of ocean life. See the wonderful pictures below.

New School Survey
NEW SCHOOL SURVEY — YOUR VOICE MATTERS!
Survey in mailboxes soon. Responses will drive School Solution planning.
The new School Building Advisory Committee wants your opinion! The Town of Scarborough is mailing surveys to a randomized sample of addresses across Scarborough. The survey covers a variety of topics related to our public school buildings. Our survey consultant, ETC Institute, will collect and curate the anonymous surveys and provide a report with key findings. The survey will also be open to the public for additional input. Your voice is important for a community solution to our schools!
NEW CITIZEN-LED SCHOOL BUILDING ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO ASSIST IN DEVELOPING SCHOOL SOLUTION
Scarborough’s School Building Advisory Committee (SBAC) was created to bring the public into the school planning process at the ground level. The SBAC was formed after the Unified School Proposal was rejected by the voters in Nov 2023. Following the referendum’s defeat, the Town Council and School Board sought to bring the public back into the conversation about a school solution. SBAC members include volunteers from the Scarborough community who bring expertise and interests to the table, as well as select elected officials.
SBAC members have divided into subcommittees focusing on different aspects of school needs. Their work now is to review and analyze the materials of the previous School committee as they seek a fiscally responsible solution for Scarborough’s school deficiencies.
When results from the town-wide survey are available, SBAC members will use this data to inform their analysis and recommendations for a school solution.
Information from Nurse Dorice
May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month
May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month in Maine and the Maine CDC encourages Mainers to remember 'Little Tick, BIG Deal'.
Ticks are already active this year. As the weather continues to get warmer into the spring and summer months, the Maine CDC expects the number of Lyme and other tick borne disease case reports to increase.
Please see the attached flyer for more information and remember to check daily for ticks...
Morning Drop Off
For those of you dropping children off, please understand that we will be outside to receive students until 8:50, at which point staff on the curb need to come inside for other duties.

Student Absence Reporting:
We ask families to report their child's absence from school by calling the main office at 207-730-5250 or by email at phoffice@scarboroughschools.org. When leaving a message, we ask that you state the reason for the absence, otherwise, office staff will reach back out to you for that information.
Excusable reasons for an absence:
- illness
- appointment
- religious holiday
- family emergency
- planned absence
For Planned Absences (a day out of school which is not illness or medical appointment related), families should fill out the PH Planned Absence Form. To reduce lost instructional time, we ask families to do their best to coordinate vacations so they line up with our scheduled school vacation weeks.
For questions about attendance, please contact the main office at 207-730-5250 or email us at phoffice@scarboroughschools.org.
