From Counselor Mills and Counselor Jasper
We are transitioning our classroom lessons from a focus on problem solving and empathy into personal safety. Here’s what we’re focused on in each grade level through the end of December:
K/1 - Finishing up Kelso the Problem Solving frog lessons and moving into personal safety. Our focus will begin with basic safety around guns, fire, traffic, helmets, dogs and water and there will also be a section on safe and unsafe touching. Please look for the letter home for more specifics.
2nd and 3rd: We are finishing up our empathy unit and moving into Personal Safety. See letters home for more specifics on what we’ll be learning.
4th and 5th: We are coming up on the end of our unit on Growth Mindset and perseverance, and the kids are doing a great job participating and learning!
From Coach Murphine
During Wednesday’s family coffee chat, we had a fantastic conversation about building strong connections between home and school. Families and caregivers shared how important it is to understand what their students are learning and how they’re learning it. Math has evolved over the years, and the Common Core standards now emphasize both content knowledge and real-world application. They also focus on developing habits of mind, like reasoning, constructing arguments, and modeling with mathematics—skills that help students think like mathematicians!
At Evergreen, we use Illustrative Mathematics as our curriculum. It's designed to align with these goals and make learning engaging and accessible for everyone. Curious about what your child is working on? Click HERE to explore grade-specific learning goals, along with helpful videos that SHOW you exactly how students are tackling their math units. For example, check out this first-grade video about working with data. Take a moment to explore the site. There are so many wonderful resources to help you support your learner at home, and we’d love for you to dive in!
We have coffee chats on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:15. Please come and join us!
Our next coffee chat is Wednesday, January 8th
