Halfway Mark!
Dear 6th Grade Families,
As we reach the halfway mark of the 6th grade year, it's important to take a moment to reflect on how far your student has come and what lies ahead. Time has a way of speeding up, and before you know it, we'll be wrapping up this academic year. Let's ensure your student is prepared to finish strong!
Stay Committed to Homework
Completing homework is crucial now more than ever. It not only reinforces what students have learned in class but also lays the foundation for future learning. Here are a few tips to help your student stay on track:
- Set a Schedule: Dedicate specific times each day for homework. Consistency will help build good habits.
- Create a Study Space: Find a quiet place where your student can focus without distractions.
- Break It Down: If assignments feel overwhelming, break them into smaller tasks and tackle them one at a time.
Thank you for your support in your students success! Please reach out to us if we can further assist!
Warm Regards,
6th Grade Team

Students of the Month
Each month the 6th grade recognizes five students (one from each homeroom) as the students of the month. Throughout the month, these students have shown what it means to be a true Butler Bulldog by following PBIS school-wide expectations, working hard in class and showing kindness.

Math News
In the month of February, we will focus on understanding expressions and writing expressions with whole-number exponents and whole-number, fraction, or variable bases. They evaluated such expressions, using properties of exponents strategically. They understood that a solution to an equation in one variable is a number that makes the equation true when the number is substituted for all instances of the variable. They represented algebraic expressions and equations in order to solve problems. They determine whether pairs of numerical exponential expressions are equivalent and explain their reasoning. Please find some examples below.

Expressions with Exponents - https://youtu.be/C1t-EBQ3GoY
Once our unit on expressions is over, we will begin the next unit by working with linear equations that have single occurrences of one variable, e.g., đť‘Ą + 1 = 5 and 4đť‘Ą = 2. Our students will now hone in on representing relationships with tape diagrams and with linear equations, explaining correspondences between these representations. They examine values that make a given linear equation true or false, and what it means for a number to be a solution to an equation. Solving equations of the form đť‘ťđť‘Ą = đť‘ž where đť‘ť and đť‘ž are rational numbers can produce complex fractions (i.e., quotients of fractions), so students extend their understanding of fractions to include those with numerators and denominators that are not whole numbers. Equations in One Variable In this section of learning your student will be learning to visualize, write, and solve equations. They did this work in previous grades with numbers. In grade 6, we often use a letter called a variable to represent a number whose value is unknown. Diagrams can help us make sense of how quantities are related.

ELA News
We’ve had an exciting and productive quarter 2 in 6th grade English Language Arts, and we’re looking forward to even more growth in quarter 3! Here’s some updates for what’s happening this month in our classrooms:
1. Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief
We are wrapping up Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by February 14th. It’s been an engaging journey through Greek mythology, and students have been diving deep into themes of heroism, friendship, and identity. Be sure to ask your child about their favorite moments from the book!
2. New Nonfiction Unit: Exploring Critical Problems and Design Solutions
After finishing Percy Jackson, we’ll begin a new unit focused on critical real-world problems. Students will read nonfiction texts, explore global issues, and analyze potential solutions. This unit is designed to encourage critical thinking and ignite conversations about how we can all contribute to positive change.
3. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind
We will also begin reading The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, a powerful nonfiction book by William Kamkwamba. This inspiring story of a young boy in Malawi who built a windmill to save his village will highlight themes of innovation, perseverance, and the importance of education.
4. Weekly Writing Practice
Writing remains a central focus of our curriculum. Students will continue to practice essential writing skills, such as organization, clarity, and grammar, through weekly homework assignments. Encourage your child to dedicate time to these assignments, as consistent practice is key to improving their writing.
Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Best regards,
6th Grade English Language Arts Team

Social Worker News

Attendance Update:
The grade level Social Workers are responsible for ALL attendance matters. Please make sure to call to report your student absent each time they are not in school. Grades 5 & 6 should call Ms. Healy x46817 and Grades 7 & 8 Ms. Casey x46866. There are no quarantine requirements for COVID anymore. This is treated like all other illnesses now. Once the student is fever free for 24 hours and not vomiting, they should return to school. Dental appointments will not excuse a full day absence, unless it is dental surgery. Please call ahead if you are planning to take a family vacation during the school year. Also, please inform us if you are moving. We need to confirm enrollment in the new school before we remove your student from our school.
Students that have had 10% or more unexcused absences will be expected to attend our Saturday School attendance recovery program to make up the missed time on learning. Students will receive a formal letter inviting them to this program.
