SUMMER TERM -28TH JUNE 2024
Message from the Head of School
What a hot week it has been in school!
We hosted our ‘New to Reception’ evening on Tuesday and it was lovely to see so many familiar faces and it was a pleasure meeting new families that will be joining HPP.
Thank you to Hampton FC who led coaching sessions with our children this week. The children really enjoyed the sessions.
We are looking forward to our Mufti day today in exchange for bottle donations for our school fayre. We look forward to seeing many members of our school community at the fayre on Saturday including some new families that will be joining us in September.
We have our moving up day on Monday and everyone is looking forward to spending the morning with their new classes. I want to take this opportunity to remind Reception parents that we have mixed the classes for Y1 and the team has spent many hours on this ensuring we have four balanced classes where outstanding teaching and learning can take place. We will not be making any changes to these classes so I respectfully request you don’t ask for any changes to be made.
We are very excited for Arts Week next week. The whole week will have an art focus and we will be exploring a range of media to create our work. Our Arts Week is following a story called 'Dear Earth' and we will look at extreme elements on our planet to inspire our art. We hope you can come and see our art gallery on Friday 5th July.
Finally, last Wednesday after the school clubs finished, you may have noticed that several police vehicles were parked outside the school. The school staff were assisting the officers with an ongoing enquiry which resulted in several HPP families being contacted by the police. The situation has now been fully resolved and there is no need for concern. I would like to thank the police for their swift and timely response to a concern which had been raised by a member of the public.
Have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you at the fayre.

We have had a wonderful week reading the story 'We're going on a bear hunt' this week. We listened carefully to the repetitive language and then joined in with the key phrases like 'swishy swashy, woo hoo, woo hoo, tip toe tip toe'.
We explored what instruments might help us to make the noise of the grass or the snow storm and enjoyed making the different noises.
We had fun in the garden moving on, under, around and through equipment and explored this further in PE.
We also enjoyed drawing our own story maps and tried really hard to remember all the key parts of the story.
Time to talk Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
We have loved reading the story 'We're going on a bear hunt' and have enjoyed joining in with the repeated parts of the story. Discuss the story together and see if you can come up with another place for the characters to go through. Maybe you come across a bridge and you have to stomp across it?
🟥 Reception
This week, we have been reading the story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt.' Within the story, the children enjoyed spotting action words and joining in with the parts that they know! We talked about our favourite parts of the story and did lots of 'think, pair, share' with our friends! We have been thinking about journeys and different modes of transport. We made a long list of all the different transport types we could think of and the children enjoyed sharing their experiences on their favourite modes of transport! We looked at lots of different transport maps including the tube, plane maps and boat maps. We then had a go at making our own travel maps to get to different places!
The children were very excited to have Hampton Football Club in to do a PE lesson with the children! We learnt to dribble with the ball and played lots of fun games!
In Maths this week, we have been revisiting 'doubling.' We have been practising being able to recall our doubling facts up to double 6 in quick fire maths! We have also been talking about the word 'equal' meaning the same on both sides.
In Phonics this week, we have been continuing to practise all of our sounds. We have been looking at pictures and trying to use our phonic knowledge to sound out the word in the pictures and write them down!

🟦 Year 1
We hope you all enjoyed last week’s sports afternoon – we did! We had lots of fun putting into practice all the skills we have learnt in PE (e.g. throwing, rolling, balancing and running) and it was great to have so many adults come and cheer us all on – thank you!
In English, we have been looking at suffixes and prefixes, and how adding these to the end and beginning of a root word can change its meaning. We have been learning about the suffixes -s, -es, -ing and -ed as well as the prefix un-.
This week in maths, we have continued using our knowledge of numbers to partition two-digit numbers into tens and ones, which we then used to help us to find missing numbers on a 100 square, as well as compare various numbers and amounts.
In geography, we have continued on our journey around the UK learning about the various landmarks we might see in each country of the UK. We identified whether the landmarks were physical or human features of the environment before creating our own poster advertising the countries of the UK and why it would be a nice place to visit.
In science this week, we have continued observing our caterpillars, watching their metamorphosis into pupae. We are excitedly waiting for when they’re ready to transform into butterflies! We have also been learning about the different types of microbes: fungi, virus and bacteria. We learnt how microbes affect us and conducted an experiment to see what effect soap has on them and why soap is important when washing our hands. We discovered that because soap removed the oils on your hands, microbes are less likely to stick to them.
We have completed our moving picture D&T project in year 1, using our original designs and adding the moving parts to these. We used the mechanisms sliders and levers to move our characters, before evaluating our work against our chosen design criteria.
In computing, we have continued our work on algorithms, moving a ‘sprite’ around our screen using the ScratchJr programme. We chose our own backgrounds, and thought about where our sprite would start, end and in what direction we would like to move it. We then programmed our sprite with an algorithm so that it would know what do and tested its accuracy, debugging it as necessary. We had lots of fun doing this!
🟩 Year 2
In English this week we have continued to focus on our text 'Meerkat Mail' where we have been writing a newspaper article about Sunny's return home to the Kalahari desert after his quest to find the perfect place to live. We loved thinking about how Sunny and his family would have felt when he returned back home. We decided that Sunny was probably still too hot but happy to see his family again. For our newspaper report we looked at what a newspaper report is and had lots of fun coming up with our own headlines for Sunny's return. After we chose our headline we wrote our report including our own pictures. Next we will be writing an adventure story where Sunny is off on his travels again.
In Maths this week we have focused on our addition and subtraction skills. We have used resources to support our knowledge and practiced drawing our dienses too to help solve problems. Please continue to practice these skills at home when you can too.
In Geography we have been thinking about our favourite food and what people in Kampong Ayer may eat. We learnt about how rice is a staple part of a Bruneian diet as well as fish. We also learnt about common treats such as Kuik Kusei and Kueh Seri Muka which sounded delicious. We didn't like the sound of smelly durian fruit though! We designed our own Bruneian meal thinking carefully about what food someone may choose in Kampong Ayer.
