From Mrs. Barry
- Is my child working to his ability?
- What are my child’s strengths and weaknesses?
- What skills will my child be expected to master this year in math, English, science and social studies
- What is my child like in class?
- Does my child participate in classroom activities?
- Does my child obey school rules?
- Is there anything that I can share with you about what my child is like at home?
- Does my child understand what she reads?
- Can my child express her thoughts and ideas clearly?
- What can I do to support my child’s learning at home?
Because the conferences are short on time, having the questions you'd like to ask prepared ahead of time will help ensure they are answered. You might even consider sending them to your child's teacher in advance, especially if you have specific topics you would like addressed. As a reminder, you can schedule a meeting with your child's teacher at any time - just reach out to schedule!
Kid's Heart Challenge
Hey MWE it’s that time again for us to begin our annual Kid’s Heart Challenge with the American Heart Association. We were able to reach and exceed our goals from last year and we hope to be able to do the same again this year!
We will be kicking off our challenge this Wednesday, October 23rd and it will run through November 13th. We encourage all families to visit our school homepage (below) to sign up, complete Finn’s mission, learn about Hands-Only CPR and make a donation if you are able.
http://www2.heart.org/site/TR?fr_id=11259&pg=company&company_id=479612
Our fundraising goal for this year is $25,000 and through the American Heart Association donations go toward nutritional education, providing healthy food options in underserved communities and saving lives from heart disease and stroke.
We can’t wait to get started with our challenge that helps so many!
Why cook for your little ghosts and goblins on Halloween? Instead, order a Chick-Fil-A nugget tray and support MWE at the same time! See flyer below for details!
October Counselors' Corner
The month of October is all about being Empathetic and Self-Aware.
SBISD believes that, Every Child appreciates differences, forms secure relationships and cares for their own and others’ emotional, mental and physical health. In a T-2-4 ready graduate this looks like a child who,
- Believes in and invests in themselves and practices self-care, and understands habits to have a healthy mind and body.
- Think and speak positively about themselves and know how and when to seek and accept help from a trusted adult.
- Demonstrates the ability to control, monitor and adjust behavior and emotions by naming their feelings and knowing that they can safely express and control them while asking for and accepting help when needed.
- Understands and respects the feelings, opinions, experiences, cultures and traditions of others to seek common ground
In SBISD, we are supporting empathy and self-awareness of our students by focusing on empathy and emotional awareness on morning announcements, community circles, and/or counseling lessons across the months of October.
Try This At Home with your PK – 1st graders:
Part of being empathetic and self-aware is to respect ourselves and others. Respect is an important trait to practice, this month, a few ways to practice are,
- Sharing at home about
- Discuss about what respect means.
- How do you show respect at home and in the community?
- How do you show respect for your family? Friends? Strangers?
- Connect the word respect, with sharing activities
- Sharing with a sibling or friend while playing a game, sport, cooking, playing with toys, etc.
Try This At Home with your 2nd and 3rd graders:
As a family, discuss and share some coping strategies you like to use when you experience a difficult emotion. Take the opportunity to find strategies that help at home or that you could do as a family. Examples could be taking a walk, stretching, doing yoga, listening to music, breathing exercises, etc. Practice these when your child is calm, so they are better prepared to apply these strategies when a challenge arises.
Try This At Home with your 4th and 5th graders:

MWE Blood Drive - Be a Hero #COMMITFORLIFE
MWE is hosting a blood drive to support the needs of the community. The event will take place Wednesday, November 6 from 11:00 am - 3:30 pm on a Donor Coach in front of the school. Please consider donating and saving a life. People are encouraged to sign up to make an appointment, but they will also take walk-ins.
Some Facts:
- In order to meet the needs of the community, the blood center needs about 1,000 donations each day.
- Every 2 second someone needs a blood transfusion.
- Blood donations can help trauma victims, surgery patients, premature babies, individuals with anemia, cancer patients, and many more.
- 1 in every 7 people will need blood at some point in their lifetime, but only 1 in 20 will donate.
