IMPORTANT MESSAGE: Please note that Metro & Dolphin Lane gates will be open from 7:30-8:00am in the morning and closed promptly at 8:00am when the bell rings. If your child is arriving later than 8:00am, please have them enter through the front of the school. Students arriving early for breakfast should also enter through our main gate at the front of the school.

Happy Valentine's Day & Presidents Day Weekend! As we celebrated Valentine's Day this Friday and through the weekend, it's a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the deeper meaning of this day beyond the cards and candy. Valentine's Day is about more than just showing affection to those we love—it’s also about kindness, empathy, and creating an atmosphere of respect and care for everyone around us.

It’s a reminder that love takes many forms—whether through friendship, family bonds, or the sense of community we build together. As a Jackie Robinson community, let's celebrate these connections and take a moment to express gratitude and appreciation for the people who make our school a warm and welcoming place.

Let’s also remember that every act of kindness, no matter how small, can make a big difference in someone's day. So, whether you give a note of encouragement, share a smile, or lend a helping hand, you are spreading the true spirit of Valentine's Day.

Thank you to those who came to the Coffee with the Principal on Thursday morning and joined us in the discussion on Understanding the Testing Process. Several of our JROB students have artwork that will be featured at the 40th annual Normal Gottlieb Student Art Exhibition through March 21st. Check out more information below and come out and support our art students!

Students must follow these rules to attend:

1. Students & Parents must have reviewed and understand the permission slip when the ticket is purchased.

2. Only Robinson Middle School students may attend the dance.

3. Students must enter the dance no later than15 minutes after the start time and may not leave the event early.

4. Students must provide their own transportation.

5. Students must be picked up from the event promptly at the end of the dance. Students will exit through the main entrance gate. Students who are picked up late may be denied participation in other school activities.

6. Students acting inappropriately will be removed from the event and can lose other privileges.

7. Robinson and LBUSD are not responsible for any lost or stolen items.

8. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable.

9. Students must have no referrals in Semester 2 to attend.

10. Students may wear free dress to the dance. Please follow LBUSD dress code guidelines for school appropriate clothing.

I request that my child participate in the activity described. In consideration of their participation, we agree as follows:

I understand and acknowledge that as provided in part Education Code 35330, I waive and forever release and discharge the Long Beach Unified School District, and Board of Education and its officers, employees, and agents from all liability, claims, loss, cost or expense arising from and attributable to the activity listed above. I acknowledge that the activity under certain circumstances could be dangerous and that my child is not required to participate in it to receive a class grade. I expressly request my child to voluntarily participate in the activity.

JROB families! If your child is a multilingual learner, we will be beginning ELPAC testing. This assessment, given annually to students designated as English Learners is an important test that help us monitor and assess the level of support we provide to our multi-lingual learners. To help better understand the test, please explore an ELPAC practice student test with your child to help lower their anxiety and be prepared for the test!

We proudly introduce Standing In Solidarity: Empowering Our Immigrant Students and Families. This effort provides essential resources, guidance and tools to help navigate the educational journey and ensure every student feels supported, included and prepared to thrive.

At Long Beach Unified, we stand in solidarity with our immigrant students and families. We are one community united in our commitment to providing an inclusive and equitable education for every student.

Our elementary student council has opened up an after school student store with snacks, drinks, and small stationary items for sale. All proceeds will be used to support student incentives and prizes.

Spanish Club will be paused until further notice. We hope to bring it back in the spring with additional support and fine tuning. If you are a VIP and interested in Spanish Club, please reach out to our office.

We hope to continue strong enrollment at Jackie Robinson! If you know a TK or K family, please encourage them to begin the enrollment process now to secure their spot at JROB!

IMPORTANT: All 5th and 8th grade students music complete a School of Choice Application or they will not be automatically placed in their next school. This includes 5th grade students who plan to continue attending middle school at Jackie Robinson Academy. Please make sure to complete your application in ParentVue.

Research shows that the students that have the most success in high school meet the following criteria:)

• 96% Attendance- (it is important to have regular attendance)
• No D's or F's in English or Math
• No Suspensions
• Minimum GPA (grade point average) = 2.5

As grades post- please take time to sit with your children and review grades, how to improve (if necessary), and set goals. The high school process in LBUSD requires students to apply to the many awesome pathways. Students with the highest semester grades will have preference. Please promote high grades. We have FREE online tutoring, Saturday School, and HW support at WRAP. Please reach out if you have any questions. Don't wait until its too late.

Please log into ParentVue and make sure that your address is correct. It is important to reflect the correct home school on the High School of Choice application. Also, if you have multiple children in LBUSD that they are linked/connected to reflex that they are siblings. (It is important if you have a child who is not currently a senior in order for the future incoming freshmen to be potentially considered when applying for a particular high school that a sibling attend). The deadline to complete these tasks is January 31, 2025.

Jackie Robinson’s policy regarding cell phones & electroinics is “Off and Out of Sight” during school hours. School hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. In order for students to avoid possible disciplinary action, they need to follow the guidelines listed below.

• Students may NOT use their cell phone on campus during any class period
• Cell phones brought to school must be turned off or placed on silent mode, put away and not visible during the school day.
• Students may use the office phone before school, during lunch, or after school to contact their family for emergency or urgent messages (i.e. where to get picked up afterschool, walk home or take the city bus home, etc.) Note: Parents, please don’t call or text your child on their cell phone during school hours.

• The use of cell phones for videotaping or taking pictures is NOT allowed, except under teacher’s supervision at designated time.
• Students who violate this policy will be subject to disciplinary action.
• Any staff member may confiscate a cell phone at any time if the student has the phone visible or is using it during any class period or during the school day. The staff member will turn the confiscated item(s) to the Administration Team.

Once an item is confiscated, there are 2 possible ways to get it back:

1. If it’s a first offense, item will be released to student after school.
   
2. If it’s a recurring offense (more than 1x), the parent/guardian must come to the school with identification to collect the item. We will not release any confiscated item to a student, even with a parent phone call.

No other electronic devices such as iPod, iTouch, iPad, earphones, earbuds, headphones, tablets, DS, DXL, Gameboy, etc. are permitted at school during the school day, except under teacher’s supervision at designated time.

Note: Jackie Robinson Academy does not assume liability for any cell phones or electronic devices that are misplaced, lost, or stolen during the school day.

Do you have a middle school student interested in participating in sports? Make sure to visit the doctor and complete the Middle School Sports Packet and submit it to the school nurse. Getting this done early helps ensure your child is eligible to participate in all our sports teams and programs throughout the year!
