THE GRANTONIAN
Week of February 10, 2025
Grant student's Nick Normington and Isaiah Carter made a schoolwide announcement today. A weekly announcement celebrating Black History Month will be made every Friday during the month of February. Today they took a moment to celebrate Charlie Sifford. Born in 1922 he was a pioneering African American professional golfer and one of the most significant figures in sports history, particularly in Black history. Often referred to as the "Jackie Robinson of Golf," Sifford broke the color barrier in a sport that had been predominantly exclusive to white players.
Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Sifford began playing golf as a child, but his talent was initially constrained by the racial segregation of the era. He encountered significant challenges due to racism, but in 1952, after years of perseverance, he became the first African American to earn a PGA Tour card. Sifford made many major contributions to Black history, such as breaking racial barriers and paving the way for future African American golfers by confronting the racial restrictions in golf. Sifford won two PGA Tour titles, including the 1967 Long Beach Open and the 1969 Greater Hartford Open, becoming the first Black golfer to win a PGA Tour event.
Sifford’s perseverance and achievements laid the groundwork for other Black golfers. Sifford’s contributions extend beyond golf, his career symbolized the fight for equality and the power of breaking down racial barriers in American sports. His induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004 was a testament to his profound impact on both golf and Black history.
COURTESY TO OUR NEIGHBORS
A message to our students
As a reminder, please be courteous to our neighbors. Be mindful of where you are parking. Do not block driveways, park in marked five minute parking spaces, or in no parking areas. In addition, the staff parking lot is for staff only. Students parking in the lot risk being towed. Also, please clean up after yourself. Do not leave trash in our neighbors lawns or on the sidewalks. Thank you.

SAFETY AT GRANT HIGH SCHOOL
Dear Grant Students and Families,
To ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff, we are reinforcing the following entrance policy.
Upon arrival, students must enter the main building through the front doors unless their first class is in the Art Building or Hollyrood.
Late arrivals (after the bell) must sign in at the main office. Signing in ensures student safety and accountability in case of an emergency.
Side entrances throughout the rest of the day: Students must show their PPS IDs to be "buzzed in”. Front office entry is required otherwise.
Doors must remain secured all day. Propping doors open or admitting others is prohibited and will result in disciplinary action.
Given the high volume of people on campus at any given time, we are working to implement measures that control building access and mitigate potential risks. It is crucial that students understand the reasoning behind these necessary security directives.
We ask that parents and families reinforce our expectations by discussing the importance of safety and reassuring students that these measures are in place solely to ensure student and staff well-being at Grant High School.
Thank you for your continued support,
Grant High School Administration
GRANT BOWL COMMUNITY COALITION
SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL
Whether you are new to Grant or a returning family, we look forward to the year ahead.
As our sports and student activities get underway, we wanted to share information on how you can make purchases or donations to support our incredible school!
Our classrooms and programs are robust and the price of supplying materials and ensuring safe and productive learning environments is costly; We would not be able to achieve this without your support.
REQUEST FOR GENERAL DONATION any amount is helpful
This year, as a school, we are tasked with doing more with less; staff, supplies, & funding. In light of this, we see that our greatest need right now is for general donations that can be used to provide:
- Course-specific and schoolwide supplies & equipment to our classrooms and support areas
- Student activities for enhanced learning, community building and engagement
- Student incentives
- Student events and celebrations
- Student support- Financial Assistance, Scholarship, 4-star Hunger Project, Support Groups
Purchase a $30 ASB sticker for your student's ID* which includes:
- Free and Fast entry to all regular season home games and
- Free and Fast entry to Homecoming Game and Dance
- Discounted Dance tickets
- All proceeds support our Student Activities.
*Your student must have the sticker on their ID for entrance. This can be picked up during lunch or after school at the Bookkeeper's Window in the hall near the main office.
Login to schoolpay to pre-purchase a $55 yearbook for your student before the price goes up to $65 after 11/30.
LIFETIME FITNESS CLASS UNIFORM
Uniforms are required for Lifetime Fitness (formerly known as PE 1-2) students, but they are not provided through district resources. This fee helps to cover the cost of PE T-Shirt, Shorts, Workbook, and other supplies.
If you prefer to give directly to a classroom or department, you will find them listed here. You can expect further communications from your student's teachers at Back-to-School Night on September 18th from 6-8:30 PM.
Whether it’s staff in the classroom, office, cafeteria, health room or athletics, we care about your students and continue to be humbled by your support.
With gratitude,
Grant High School
GO GENERALS!
STUDENT STORE
Why purchase a 24/25 ASB Sticker?
Student participation at sporting events and dances is highly encouraged and celebrated at Grant High School. To make attendance easier for our students, we offer an annual Associated Student Body (ASB) Sticker for $30 that provides for this school year:
What are the benefits? If your student plans to attend dances or any home games, the ASB sticker will save both money and time with a quick flash of their ID for admittance to games! All proceeds are used to support: student activities, classroom supplies and equipment, events, and students experiencing financial hardship. Where can I purchase one for my student?
Purchase the 24/25 ASB sticker online and then we will have time during lunch and after school for your student to have it added to their brand-new GHS Student ID. To purchase in-person, you can also send your student in with cash or check.

HEALTHY CHOICES BULLETIN
A monthly newsletter of substance abuse resources for families, students and staff.
The purpose of this communication is to alert families about a troubling pattern of online cyber abuse, which targets youth aged 14-18, particularly males, referred to as Sextortion. Sextortion occurs when someone is coerced into sending explicit images and once those images are received, they are used to threaten and extort (usually for money). In most cases, the teen believes they are exchanging the images with a teen of a similar age - this is part of the scam. Recently, federal law enforcement warned schools to be on the lookout for warning signs so that we may have the opportunity to intervene in potentially dangerous situations before things go too far. Last week, Hulu released a powerful documentary called IMPACT X Nightline: Sextortion that serves as an urgent warning and call to action for parents. While we recommend the film, we do so with caution as teen suicide is discussed throughout - please take care when watching. Included here are links to information, tips, and resources we’ve gathered about protecting teens from harm by online predators. We hope it will encourage conversation at home and between teens within their peer groups. As always, we welcome your feedback. Report concerns to Safe Oregon using any of the following methods.

Dear Grant Families,
Please remember to keep your student's home if they are ill. Schools tend to see an uptick in illnesses after winter break due to travel and indoor social gatherings. Please refer to the Communicable Disease Guidance (link below) if your student is ill and you're unsure when they should attend school. You can also reach out to the school nurse if you have any questions. Thank you and have a wonderful winter break!
