Goodrich Middle School
March 2016
Don’t forget our "March is Reading Month!" theme, which is to GET WILD AND READ! Our students have been tasked to take a "crazy reading selfie" picture and turn them in to their English teachers. Student and staff pictures will be displayed in the windows of the Media Center and App Lab during the month of March!

Why Does Attendance Matter?
Every school day counts in a child's academic life...
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, a missed school day is a lost opportunity for students to learn. In this era of increased accountability for states, districts, and schools, the connection between student attendance and learning is being studied more than ever before. As a result, education agencies are tasked with increasing frequency to report attendance data in a standard manner to allow comparisons across organizations and jurisdictions.
Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. This relationship between attendance and achievement may appear early in a child's school career. A recent study looking at young children found that absenteeism in kindergarten was associated with negative first grade outcomes such as greater absenteeism in subsequent years and lower achievement in reading, math, and general knowledge.1
Research shows that attendance is an important factor in student achievement. Poor attendance has serious implications for later outcomes as well. High school dropouts have been found to exhibit a history of negative behaviors, including high levels of absenteeism throughout their childhood, at higher rates than high school graduates.2 These differences in absentee rates were observed as early as kindergarten, and students who eventually dropped out of high school missed significantly more days of school in first grade than their peers who graduated from high school. In eighth grade, this pattern was even more apparent and, by ninth grade, attendance was shown to be a key indicator significantly correlated with high school graduation.3
Any absence, whether excused or not, denies students the opportunity to learn in accordance with the school's instructional program.

After School Pick Up Safety
If you pick your child up at the end of the school day, we need to ask for your help to ensure the safety of ALL Goodrich Middle School children. We've had several "close calls" because of drivers who are in too much of a hurry to follow caravan/pick-up protocol.
Please note that any student being picked up at the end of the day must be picked up at the NORTH END of the building ONLY! DO NOT park in any other area or parking lot to wait for your child to come to you. This includes the visitor's lot, Oaktree's circle drive and the parking lot by the gym. Also, when waiting for your child in the caravan/pick-up line, please wait your turn in line and then pull all the way forward to pick up your child at the building doors to ensure their safety.
To summarize, unless your child(ren) rides the bus, is signed out for early release in the office by an authorized individual or is walking to the high school for sports practice, they should be picked up in the parent pick-up/caravan line at the designated location at the north end of the middle school. Please share this information with anyone who may be picking up your child/children as well.
Thank you in advance for your help to
ensure all of our children are safe!
