The Latest from L'Etoile
11/1/2024
Dear Franklin Academy Families,
Happy November 1st and weekend!
I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Atway and the committee for planning and executing our Red Ribbon Week. It was a fantastic week filled with fun activities centered around the "Don't Be Afraid to Say No to Drugs" campaign.
I also want to thank all the parents who have been arriving early for carline. We’ve noticed a positive difference! Please remember not to change lanes while in carline, as this can actually increase your wait time. We conduct timed tests every day, and once cars reach the curve near the dumpster, the average wait time is just 5 minutes.
To ensure a smooth drop-off process, please move all the way up. Our staff members are posted at various points along the carline to assist your child(ren) in getting to the cafeteria or their classrooms.
What a fun event we had with the Character Parade for grades K-3 and the Vocabulary Parade for grades 4-5! It was wonderful to see the effort and creativity put into the costumes. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and to the parents who were able to attend.
I also want to extend my gratitude to the families who joined our "Coffee with Admin" on Wednesday. We had over 200 parents and guardians attend this virtual meeting, and we truly appreciate your input, feedback, shout outs, and concerns. We are here to support you and your child(ren).
Reminders:
- Staff SHOUT OUT: Thank you to everyone who has submitted a Staff SHOUT OUT! If you haven’t had a chance yet, please take a moment each week to complete the survey to help us recognize our amazing staff members. [Click here]
- Service Hour Opportunities: Don’t forget to check the service hour opportunities listed below in our newsletter. By 12/20, you should have completed your service hours.
- Time Change: Remember to turn your clocks back this weekend.
- School Closure: School will be closed on Tuesday, November 5th.

- Stay in your lane and do not cut the line.
- We kindly request that you do not park your vehicles on Military Trail or Miner Road during dismissal times. This is crucial for the safety of everyone involved and to prevent traffic congestion that can lead to accidents.

Elementary School Counselor's Corner- Mr. VanDyke
Can you believe it’s already November? How time flies. I read the other day that by the time our kids turn 12, we will have exhausted 75% of the total time we will have spent with them by that point. Gary Chapman, PhD wrote the book the 5 Love Languages, outlining different ways people can show and receive love. But the most important of these might be “quality time” because without time it’s hard to have anything else! Gandalf, from the Lord of the Rings books, says to Frodo, “All that is meant for us to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” I’m struck with how often I find my own kids retreating, retreating to their rooms, retreating to their screens, retreating to activities with friends. With thanksgiving on the way, what a great time to “gather”.
So gather the troops! Spend some quality time getting to know the people that they are becoming. Like the seasons, and the times, Bob Dylan says: “they are a changin’”. There’s no better time than right now. There was a study published in the National Institute of Health back in 2017 discovered that: “The more time parents spent with children, the higher their children's well-being will be …and also improve their academic performance.” https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10106685/ And “time” Billy Graham once said, “is short.”

Review our school’s Programme of Inquiry
If you have an interest in or expertise related to our units. We may be able to use you as a valuable resource during one of our units of inquiry. Contact the IB Coordinator Yamile Francese- francese.yamile@franklin-academy.org
Ask your child about the theme, central idea, and concepts into which they are inquiring… show interest in their units of inquiry.
Encourage your children to “discover” rather than telling them answers. This will foster lifelong self-efficacy that will benefit them both inside and outside of school.
Bring the IB Learner Profile home by incorporating the language of the ten attributes. Complete the "I See IB" forms.
Foster independence in your child by supporting them with school projects and in problem-solving interactions with others, versus doing the work for them. This will give them the confidence needed to thrive and grow.
PYP 1 had a special presentation from the local police department about rules and laws. This presentation linked into their unit 2 planner
