A Note From Mrs. Shaw...
Dear Abraham Lincoln Families,
We have many exciting plans for the spring. We will be asking for parent volunteers to accompany students on field trips, help with the end of year field day, and other events this spring. We have one final parent volunteer training to attend if you think you may want to volunteer at one of our events this spring. This training is on April 9 at 5:00p. By attending this training session, we can ensure the process is complete prior to May volunteering opportunities at school. The process for becoming an approved volunteer involves the following steps:
- Attend volunteer training session with Mrs. Shaw on April 9
- Complete the volunteer application
- Supt. office will conduct a background check
Abe Lincoln Chess Team Earns 2nd Place in State Chess Tournament
Congratulations to our very own Abraham Lincoln Chess Team for earning second place in the state chess tournament on Saturday, March 8.
Chickadee Award Voting
Over the course of the school year, the Abraham Lincoln students have participated in the Maine State Chickadee Awards. The students have read all ten of the 2024-2025 Chickadee nominated books. During library class, the students voted for their favorite nominee. The results are in for Abraham Lincoln and the book titled, "Black Beach, A Community, An Oil Spill, and the Origin of Earth Day" received the most votes. The students resonated with this book due to the children in the story who helped to clean up an oil spill and participated in the first Earth Day events. The Maine State Chickadee Award Winner will be announced this spring. The Abraham Lincoln students are so excited to see if their book is the favorite across the state of Maine!

Art/Library Research Collaboration
In a collaborative learning project between the Abraham Lincoln art teacher, Mrs. Crahen and librarian, Mrs. Dufresne, the second-grade classes participated in creating an underwater display learning about how pollution affects sea creatures in the ocean.
During library lessons, the second graders learned about call numbers and how to do research to find books within the library about sea life and water pollution. After reading the book, “Inky’s Amazing Escape” by Sy Montgomery students created their own poster to highlight the non-fiction topic of Octopus in the Sea. The importance for students to learn how to use the library as a tool is imperative in developing their skills on completing research projects.
During art, second grade created sea creature sculptures. After a discussion about two dimensional versus three-dimensional art, students explored ways to shape and fill flat paper into 3-D forms. They worked to create an armature (a form to give sculptures structure and form) and explored ways to add details, like 3-D eyes, fins, tentacles, etc. This project challenged students to consider the final display of their artwork, including the kinetic nature of a hanging sculpture, so that as it slowly turns and spins, all sides are seen. Second graders were so eager to see their work alongside other student work, giving the viewer the impression of standing on the seafloor, gazing up to see an environment teaming with sea life but also trash and pollution. They were hopeful that this art installation will educate, inspire, and empower people to protect our beautiful oceans.
After completing the project, students were excited to display their artwork and posters to show what they learned about the importance of recycling and the effects of trash in the ocean. Abraham Lincoln staff are working to collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to enhance students’ learnings across many topics. We look forward to highlighting future joint endeavors.
