A Message From Principal Dillman
Over the past month, it has been my pleasure to witness our scholars and staff thriving with being fully in the swing of academics and school wide events. I am filled with pride and gratitude each day for the opportunity to serve this incredible community as the School Principal. It is truly an honor to work alongside such dedicated educators, supportive families, and, most importantly, our amazing scholars.
This year, we are excited to build on our tradition of excellence, guided by our shared values and the mission that drives us to help each student reach their fullest potential. Together, in our 10th year, we can create infinite possibilities of growth, achievement, and memorable experiences for all our scholars. Through each interaction and parent event we have on campus, I have been able to observe the true advocacy you have for your child (ren), and dedication to their academic success.
Each year, we work diligently to ensure we create and maintain a safe and supportive school community. You are a vital part of ensuring a successful and safe school year. Since the summer, we have been sending out parent communication via our mass communication tool of BrightArrow (a part of the PowerSchool platform) to keep our Franklin Academy community of stakeholders informed. Please dedicate time to reading and reviewing the parent communication as it can be on a variety of topics, most importantly safety. In the following newsletter, you will be informed on the trainings all stakeholders (staff and scholars) have been a part as well as important safety information that highlights our shared responsibility in keeping our school community safe and secure.
Your continued support and partnership are vital to ensuring a successful and safe school year.
Thank you again for being an integral part of the Franklin Academy family.
Sincerely,
Shaina Dillman
Interim Principal

Our School Safety Plan
Please understand that in an actual safety incident, we collaborate with our School Resource Officer on site, our SuperIntendent of Schools, Dr. Sandberg, and Broward County officials. Our School Resource Officer communicates fluidly with the City of Sunrise Police Department, alongside School Administration and our Superintendent of Schools. The method of consistent communication is a part of the safety protocols in place for Broward County and Franklin Academy.
In regard to the level of communication to expect in an actual safety incident, we have protocols as part of our crisis management plan with specific allowable components. As a part of our crisis management plan, we cannot share specific details of an actual safety incident to maintain the safety of our scholars, staff and school. The level of communication will be in line with protocols in place and the frequency will depend on when new or relevant information is available. Official information will be shared through our mass communication platform of BrightArrow, in email and/or text format, as updates are made available.
You, as parents/guardians play an essential role alongside the staff and scholars in maintaining the School's Safety Plan.
As active participants in the school community, we kindly ask for your support and diligence in the following:
- Thoroughly reviewing all the critical information provided below: Descriptions of the Standard Response Protocol: Five Key Actions, and the Flyer describing how parents/guardians play an important role in the School's Safety Plan.
- Speak to your child(ren) on the importance of each drill conducted during the school year. Each drill is crucial in preparation for both staff and scholars to respond swiftly and correctly in case of an actual emergency.
- For an emergency (Lockdown) drill, following directions, gathering in the safer space, and remaining silent are essential to ensure everyone's safety. When scholars do not comply, it can lead to confusion, impede on the effectiveness of the drill, and cause an unsafe situation.
- Avoid contacting your child(ren) or staff via cell phone or social media in an actual emergency as they will be engaged in following the safety protocols in place.
- Avoid posting on social media. Official information will be shared through our mass communication platform of BrightArrow via PowerSchool as updates are made available.
- Ensure your contact information is always up to date so you can be reached promptly in an emergency. There is a form on the PowerSchool Parent Portal entitled, Contact Update, which can be completed at anytime in the year.
Your cooperation is crucial in helping us create a secure and supportive environment for all our students and staff. Thank you for partnering with us in this important effort.
Standard Response Protocol (SRP): Common Language
HOLD
"HOLD" is called when the hallways need to be kept clear, even during class changes. Examples of HOLD conditions may include a medical issue that needs attention or unfinished maintenance in a common area.
SECURE
"SECURE" is called when there is something dangerous outside of the building. Scholars and staff are brought into the building and the outside doors will be locked. The school might display the "Building is Secured" poster on entry doors or nearby windows. Inside, it will be business as usual.
LOCKDOWN
"LOCKDOWN" is called when there is something dangerous inside the building. Scholars and staff are trained to enter or remain in a room that can be locked and maintain strict silence. A Lockdown is only initiated when there is an active threat inside or very close to the building. Lockdown drills are conducted regularly and are monitored by law enforcement.
EVACUATE
"EVACUATE" is called when there is a need to move people from one location to another for safety reasons. An on-site evacuation drill is conducted regularly as a "FIRE DRILL".
SHELTER
"SHELTER" is called when specific protective actions are needed based on severe weather or hazard. Sheltering requires that all scholars and staff follow response directives. Shelter safety strategies are drilled at least twice per year, or as mandated by the state.
Guardian Defense
Franklin Academy has partnered with Guardian Defense, a company that collaborates with schools, to provide the Active Threat Response Program Training. We, as your School Administration, felt compelled to keep staff up to speed with best practices on how to plan for, and respond to, threats in our schools today. Guardian Defense worked alongside our School Administration Team to reinforce how critical it is to drill and prepare for active threats, just as we do for fires and natural disasters. The Franklin Academy Sunrise Staff was recently trained in active threat response on August 2, 2024, prior to the first day of school.
The next step of the training process was to prepare the scholars for school-wide drills. It is imperative your child(ren) understands what an active threat is and what is expected from them during a Lockdown drill; or in the instance of an actual safety incident. Parent Communication was sent by the school administration prior to the scheduled assemblies. On Friday, August 30, 2024, the Guardian Defense team conducted a short assembly for our scholars in grades 5th & Year 1 (6th); Year 2 & Year 3 (7th-8th); 3rd & 4th. The presentation covered/introduced terms such as: “Lockdown,” “Active Threat,” and “Hold.” In addition, they spoke about measures your child(ren) can take to prevent an incident.
Guardian Defense tailored each presentation for grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8, to ensure the information was presented in an age-appropriate manner. It is critical to both Guardian Defense and Franklin Academy that we do not instill fear; rather, we educate your child(ren) on safe practices. We encourage you, as their parents/guardians, to have follow-up conversations with your child(ren) to reinforce the concepts taught.
Mandatory Broward Trainings
Each year, our staff completes the following Mandatory Broward County Trainings:
- SBBC Anti-Bullying Policy 5.9 Training Modules
- Dating Violence Policy 5010 Training Modules
- Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse
- Positive Behavioral Support HB 149
- Universal Precautions/Infection Control
- Recognizing and Preventing Sexual Harassment
- Warning Signs
- Self-Reporting Rule
In addition to the above staff trainings, there are two mandatory parent courses this school year: Anti-Bullying and Dating Violence Awareness. These courses are crucial in helping us maintain a safe and supportive environment for all students. Completion of these courses is required as part of our commitment to student safety.

Spread Positivity in the School Community
Staff Shout Outs:
We want to ensure we have a positive school culture, and we know that each interaction between stakeholders plays a role in the morale of our school community.
We would love for our parents/guardians to shout out a staff member (educator, support staff, leadership or administration team member) to let them know you appreciate them and how they play an important role in your child(ren)'s educational experience.

School Wide Reminders
Title 1
WHAT IS TITLE I?
- Title I is the largest federal assistance program for our nation’s schools.
- The goal of Title I is a higher quality of education for every child.
- The program serves millions of children in elementary and secondary schools each year. Franklin Academy (Sunrise Campus) is a Title I school.
To continue as a Title 1 School, we must ask all our parents to please complete the National School Lunch Program Application. This program is crucial to maintain our designation as a Title I School. Our Title I status is based off of the percentage of families who qualify for the NSLP. Due to our Title I status, we are able to have specific academic support team members, supplemental curriculum and parental involvement resources from the Title I funds allocated for our school.
Please apply for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) to ensure our school can continue our path toward excellence with the resources provided through Title I funds.

Start your Parent Service Hours Today!
Parent involvement significantly contributes to students' academic success by fostering a sense of safety and security and enhancing learning gains. At Franklin Academy, families are expected to contribute a minimum of eight (8) Parent Service Hours each academic year, regardless of the number of students enrolled.
These service hours must be completed between July 1st and June 30th of each school year and cannot be fulfilled through financial contributions or donations. Families can earn service hours both at school and at home, with opportunities provided by the school.
Volunteers must sign in at the front desk and wear a VOLUNTEER BADGE at all times while on campus. Failure to sign out after volunteering will result in the hours not counting toward the service hour requirement.
Failure to meet this annual requirement may result in consequences, including:
- Possible exclusion from returning the following year.
- Restrictions on students' participation in extra-curricular activities.
- Service hours may only be performed by parents, legal guardians, and immediate family members who have submitted an official volunteer application. Exceptions to this rule require prior approval from school officials.
- Siblings performing service hours on behalf of the family must be 18 years or older and not currently attending a public school.
Please refer to the Service Hour Brochure on the school website for detailed policies and requirements.
