This newsletter is intended for YSD1 families involved in Parenting Partnerships and/or have children in YSD1 schools. Each month various activities will be highlighted in order to help you stay actively engaged with your child(ren), community and schools. Happy Reading!

We're Different, We're the Same by Sesame Street

The Colors of Us by Karen Katz

A positive and affirming look at skin color, from an artist's perspective.

Seven-year-old Lena is going to paint a picture of herself. She wants to use brown paint for her skin. But when she and her mother take a walk through the neighborhood, Lena learns that brown comes in many different shades.

Cougar Cubs Centers (Select Fridays each month)

We have planned multiple developmental centers for children 4 and under. Parents/caregivers will be guided, with the support of Parent Educators, to work with their children in fun, creative learning stations. There will be a focus on fine motor, gross motor, and language development. Come join us and have a great time learning and engaging with your child!

The Tallest Tower

Zoe and her mom are working together to build "the tallest tower". Cougar Cub Centers work to offer a variety of activities and experiences for you and your child to interact.

Dancing Fun!

Singing and dancing together not only helps with language development but also increases gross motor skills while being physically active. It is also FUN for everyone involved during Cougar Cub Centers!

Moms Love Reading Too!

Heather has embraced her love of reading to her daughter, Eleanor, and is not afraid to showcase her awesome read aloud skills with the group during Cougar Cub Centers.

Important Dates:

  • Friday, January 14th & 28th: 9-10am: Join us at Parenting Partnerships for Cougar Cub Center Time for children up to age 4. We will have developmental centers for you and your child(ren) to explore together with the guidance of our Parent Educators.
  • Saturday, January 8th: YCHS Winter Graduation (2pm, YCHS)
  • Tuesday, January 11th at 6:30pm: YSD1 Board Meeting at YSD1 District Office
  • Monday, January 17th: No School: MLK Holiday.
  • Looking ahead: February 11th & 25th: 9-10am: Cougar Cub Centers

  • Parenting Partnerships: If you have a child under the age of 5 and could use some extra support with activities and resources, call us at 803-684-1504.
  • Tri-District Adult Ed: Call 803-818-8440 for information and GED, ESL, and other classes/assessments offered.
  • York Head Start: They are still enrolling students aged 3-4 years old. Please call 803-684-2093 for more information.
  • Affinity Health Clinic at York is open on Tuesdays for local patients. Please call 803-909-6363 to make an appointment.

FREE Virtual Parent Classes/Trainings for Parents & Caregivers

Children's Trust of South Carolina is offering free trainings/classes for parents, caregivers, or anyone interested in understanding development and supporting young children. Please visit: https://scchildren.org/events/ for more information or to sign up. Dates are monthly through May 2022.

Parent Educator Spotlight: Frankie Wanger

Frankie joined our Parenting Partnerships family in March of 2021. She quickly got to work learning and understanding the data system, requirements and families. She has shown her passion for giving, supporting others and teaching through her work as a Parent Educator for YSD1 while still supporting her large family and the YSD1 community. We are thankful for Frankie and excited to watch her continued growth!
