Markham Reconstruction Update, 7-26
Dear Markham community,
We wanted to provide you with an update on the reconstruction of the Markham school building and give you a glimpse of where the Jackson portable classroom installation currently stands.
We have made a great deal of progress since we last reached out in May, and we continue to work toward our goal of reopening Markham to staff and students after winter break.
Reconstruction Snapshot
All asbestos abatement is complete.
We have finished installing the building’s new plumbing system.
We have completed phase 1 and 2 of the electrical work.
We have begun phase 2 of the sheetrock installation.
We are in the process of replacing all the forced air coils in the building’s new and more efficient HVAC system.
We have obtained approval for our plan to finish the new gym floor install.
Move-In Update
We have moved all curricular materials from Capitol Hill, Hayhurst, Maplewood, and Rieke to the appropriate classrooms at Jackson.
We are looking into ordering any necessary replacement furniture and will have those items moved into Jackson in the next few weeks.
Portable Classroom Installation
We have completed all the preliminary steps to ready the portable classrooms to house Jackson seventh and eighth graders during this fall’s colocation. These steps include equipping each unit with power, internet, and fire suppression systems. The units have also passed all initial safety inspections. All that remains is for the City of Portland to approve the final anchor system safety inspection and issue the occupancy permit.
As a reminder, Markham students will be housed in Jackson’s east wing when the new school year begins.
We hope everyone is having a joyful and relaxing summer. We will reach out with more information very soon.
Sincerely,
Dan Jung, Chief Operating Officer
