Jarvis Wiggins Makes History As First-Ever DCS Student To Graduate With An Accelerated Career Diploma
With pride and joy on their faces, a devoted mother-son duo from the Fighting Irish Family walked onto the stage together to claim their hard-earned diplomas during last night’s Oconee Fall Line Technical College Fall Commencement Ceremony!
Jarvis Wiggins made history as the first-ever Dublin City Schools student to graduate with an Accelerated Career Diploma, while his mom, Candice Wiggins, was celebrated for earning her nursing degree.
The Accelerated Career Diploma Program offers a flexible path to graduation, allowing students to either complete post-secondary academic courses that fulfill high school requirements or finish nine high school courses and earn a career-focused post-secondary credential. Essentially, the program equips students for their desired careers while also enabling them to participate in high school extracurriculars.
Wiggins began the program during 9th Grade, pursuing a welding concentration. Reflecting on his experience, he said, “The program set me up well in life because I have a jumpstart to my career.”
Once Wiggins adds a second diploma to his collection as a Dublin High School graduate this May, he plans to continue pursuing a career in welding.
“Jarvis represents the true meaning of high achievement and success for Dublin High School,” said Principal Dr. Michael Overstreet. “Jarvis and I have a special relationship, and I was so excited to be there to celebrate him.”
Wiggins shared that earning his diploma, especially alongside his mom, was incredibly emotional, with both shedding a few tears last night.
“I’m so proud of my mom and appreciate that she instilled in us the desire to make the world a better place,” he said. “When I walked across that stage, it felt like a new beginning. I feel like I can achieve even more.”
This remarkable moment serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, family support, and the limitless potential of a Dublin City Schools education. Truly, we couldn’t be prouder to call Jarvis one of our own!
