Repeat Announcement - NEISD Immigration Policy Procedures
The information below regarding immigration procedures in NEISD was sent by our Superintendent:
Jan. 30, 2025
Dear NEISD Parents and Staff,
I want to address recent changes to immigration policies and how that may impact our District. Recently, it was announced that the Department of Homeland Security reversed a policy that limited arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers at locations, such as schools, hospitals and places of worship.
I realize this announcement has created anxiety and uncertainty for many of our families. So, I want to provide some clarity on North East ISD procedures.
First, consistent with existing Supreme Court law, we educate all students, regardless of their citizenship status. We do not ask about immigration status, nor do we maintain or collect any data on that. It is irrelevant to our mission of serving students.
ICE, like any other law enforcement agency, must check in, show identification and provide proper documentation. We are familiar with complying with subpoenas and/or warrants from our local police departments and governmental agencies, and ICE will be handled in the same manner.
Just this week, the San Antonio field office director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations said that his team has no intention of targeting sensitive locations unless an especially dangerous criminal is inside. If ICE does execute a warrant at one of our campuses, we will promptly alert parents to ensure against misinformation.
Please take a moment to double check your contact information. If you need to update your email address, emergency contacts or phone number, you can easily do so by logging into Skyward Family Access.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your home campus or our District office. NEISD is committed to working with our families and staff members to maintain a safe environment for everyone in our schools and comply with applicable law.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sean Maika
NEISD Superintendent of Schools
Atentamente,
Dr. Sean Maika
Superintendente de Escuelas de NEISD

January 5, 2025 Updates and Reminders
Welcome Back to 2025!
Happy New Year! I hope this message finds you rested, rejuvenated, and ready for an exciting 2025. On behalf of our entire staff, I’d like to extend a warm welcome back as we begin the second half of our school year.
We are committed to making 2025 a year of growth, success, and opportunity for every student. Whether it’s academic challenges, personal growth, or social-emotional support, we are here to partner with you and your children every step of the way.
As we start the new year, here are a few important reminders to help us all stay connected and informed:
Attendance Matters: Being present and on time is key to student success. Please ensure your child is at school every day unless they are ill.
Open Communication: Our staff is here to support you. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please reach out to your child’s teacher or our administrative team.
Stay Informed: Regularly check our school website, newsletters, and social media for updates on events, programs, and important deadlines.
Volunteer Opportunities: We love having our families involved! If you’re interested in volunteering, please reach out to our office to learn about upcoming opportunities.
Safety First: We will continue to practice safety drills this semester. Be sure to discuss with your child the importance of being safe on campus and online.
We have so much to look forward to this semester—exciting classroom projects, school-wide events, and opportunities to celebrate student achievements. Together, we can make this a wonderful and enriching time for our students.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Here’s to a fantastic 2025 at Wilshire!
Please click below to see our January calendar of events.
Report Card Day on Friday, January 10!

Second Grading Period Awards Ceremonies
Students earning an E in Conduct, Perfect Attendance, A Honor Roll (all A's) or A-B Honor Roll (A's and B's) will be recognized on Wednesday, January 15.
Inclement Weather/ Bad Weather Makeup Days:
As we have inclement weather in the forecast for January, please stay tuned to the NEISD Facebook Page, https://www.facebook.com/NorthEastISD/, and local news outlets for any updates regarding school closures. Due to the size of our district, NEISD will never only delay classes.
Please be aware that NEISD is on a 177-day calendar for the 2024-2025 school year, meaning we are required to make up two days of canceled classes before we can submit for a TEA waiver. The makeup days are scheduled for February 17th and May 23rd. We encourage families to keep their plans flexible in case these dates need to be used for makeup days.
Additionally, in the event of school closure, incident, or an emergency, it’s crucial that your contact information is up to date in Skyward, so you are receiving pertinent, timely updates from NEISD.
Parents, please take a moment to double check your contact information. If you need to update your email address, emergency contacts or phone number, you can easily do so by logging into Skyward Family Access (neisd.net/skyward).
It may also be possible that you inadvertently unsubscribed from text or email communication from the District. If you believe that’s the case, you can log into your account to double check.
In the event of an incident or emergency on District property, NEISD will communicate with you through several avenues, including email, text message, phone calls, social media and neisd.net.
Phone numbers and email addresses for messaging are pulled directly from Skyward. It is vital that this information is accurate and updated as soon as possible.
Preparing Jackets for School
As we move into cooler weather, it is strongly encouraged to place your child's name inside the back of their jackets by the tag. We often have numerous jackets in our lost and found that stay lost and never found. This proactive step can help ensure that these warm clothing items you buy for your students get returned directly to them.

ATTENDANCE IN THE EARLY GRADES
Many of our youngest students miss 10 percent of the school year - about 18 days a year or just two days every month.
Chronic absenteeism in kindergarten, and even Pre-K, can predict lower test scores, poor attendance, and retention in later grades, especially if the problem persists for more than a year.

Important Reminder: Attendance Matters!
As we progress through the school year, it is important to emphasize the significance of regular attendance and punctuality for our students.
While we understand that health issues and unforeseen circumstances can arise, consistent attendance is crucial for student success. Research shows that students who attend school regularly tend to perform better academically, develop strong social skills, and maintain positive relationships with peers and teachers.
Specifically, data indicates that:
- Academic Performance: Students who miss just 10% of the school year—approximately 18 days—are 3 times more likely to fail in reading and math assessments than their peers who attend regularly.
- Long-term Impact: Chronic absenteeism in elementary school (missing 15 or more days per year) is linked to a 50% higher likelihood of dropping out of high school.
- Social Skills: Children who are frequently absent struggle more with peer relationships, resulting in a 30% higher chance of experiencing social difficulties.
When students miss school, they miss valuable instruction and experiences that contribute to their overall learning. Additionally, frequent absences can lead to academic challenges that may be difficult to overcome later on.
We encourage you to prioritize your child's attendance and to communicate with us regarding any challenges that may affect their ability to be present. If you need support, please reach out to our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Gallion, or our Family Specialist, Mrs. De La Rosa, at 210-407-9400. We are here to help!
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Let’s continue to foster an environment where our students can thrive!

ATTENDANCE MATTERS AT WILSHIRE ELEMENTARY!
When children are not ill, it is extremely important to be on time and present each school day. Here's why:
- Starting in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10% (about 2 days a month over the course of the school year) can make it hard for your child to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if the miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- Being late to school can lead to poor attendance.
- Absences and tardiness can impact the whole class when the teacher has to slow down learning to help students catch up.
Our campus attendance goal is 95%!
This week our attendance rate was 94.9%.
Join us in celebrating the importance of consistent attendance at school during our Attendance Awareness Week from Monday, September 16 through Friday, September 20!
EVERY DAY COUNTS!
August 25, 2024 Updates and Reminders
Important Information Regarding Attendance and Student Arrival
We are seeking your assistance to meet our attendance goal this year! Always remember ATTENDANCE matters here at Wilshire Elementary. We finished out Week 2 with 95% attendance!
This year our students will be participating in "Strive for 5!" We are encouraging students to miss no more than 5 days this school year!
Here are some reminders about our procedures for attendance and tardies:
- Breakfast Service: Breakfast is available to all students at no cost from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
- Classroom Access: Students are walked to the classrooms starting at 7:25 a.m. each day.
- Tardy Policy: Students are marked tardy if they arrive after 7:30 a.m. If students arrive late, parents are required to escort their child to the main office to sign them in, with identification required.
- Morning Announcements: The instructional day begins at 7:30 a.m. with our morning announcements.
- Student Drop Off Locations: PK students should be dropped off at the Timberlane entrance prior to 7:30 a.m. Students in grades K-5 are dropped off at the main entrance on Cascade Place. All students arriving after 7:30 a.m. should be escorted into the building through the main entrance on Cascade Place. Please use the crosswalk in the morning at drop-off.
- Absences: If your child is absent, the office requires a doctor’s note or written note when your child returns to school in order to excuse the absence. Notes are needed in all instances, even if you have called the office to report the absence.
Thank you for supporting your child's attendance! We are Wilshire Wildcats and we can do it! Remember that EVERYDAY COUNTS!

Beginning of Year MAP Assessment
While many are familiar with state standardized academic based assessments (like the STAAR test), we use other assessments to guide our planning of student instruction. NEISD administers the NWEA MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Growth assessment to all elementary students 3 times a year. This is a progress assessment that allows us to monitor individual student growth in reading and math. There are no right or wrong answers for these assessments. Instead, MAP Growth is designed to determine individual learning readiness for specific standards. All Wilshire students K-5 will be assessed over the next few weeks beginning Monday, August 26. Results will be reviewed at parent conferences in September. Click on the link for additional information about MAP Growth.
