MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Greetings MVCSD Community,
This week started strong, with the opening of Graham School on Monday. The Building and Grounds Department did a fantastic job with the renovations of the building and getting it ready so quickly for the students. With the challenge of a short lead time, they were able to successfully provide our students with a safe place to start their in-person learning. Graham faculty and staff also did a superb job of starting the school year remotely, minimizing any learning losses from the delayed opening. Overall, the District came together spectacularly to open the school in a safe and timely fashion, with minimal disruption to our students.
Our Pupil Personnel Services and Special Education Department held a meet-and-greet this Wednesday, and I was glad to see so many parents coming to learn more about Special Education in the District. They had the opportunity to meet the members of our PPS and Special Education teams. Parents also had the chance to learn about workshops offered by the District.
Mount Vernon High School Assistant Principal Erica Naughton is a proud graduate of the Mount Vernon City School District. Shortly after graduating, she became an educator to give back to her community. Ms. Naughton works hard, inspiring others to go after their dreams. She has played a major role in enhancing the education of our students, and I commend her for all that she has accomplished for the District and herself. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to our scholars.
Dads Take Your Child to School Day was a great success! Thank you to our faculty and staff for making our fathers and father figures feel welcomed. A big thank you to the families and fathers who participated in the day. Your involvement in your children’s education is essential to their academic and personal development. I encourage you to continue participating in events like this one and supporting your child anyway you can.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. K. Veronica Smith
Acting Superintendent of Schools

MOUNT VERNON CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT HOLDS SPECIAL EDUCATION MEET-AND-GREET
Parents filed into the auditorium at Rebecca Turner Academy to meet Special Education Department staff, Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) staff, and hear more about how the Mount Vernon City School District can support their children’s success. Parents also learned about different resources they can use at the meet-and-greet, which was held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
OUR STUDENTS, NOW: ERICA NAUGHTON
Mount Vernon High School Assistant Principal Erica Naughton graduated from MVHS in 1998 and soon after began teaching within the Mount Vernon City School District. She has dedicated her career to educating in the District she grew up in and has committed her time and passion to Mount Vernon students. She also serves as the varsity girls basketball coach, giving her even more time to impact her students.
