Parkview Elementary Weekly News
September 6, 2024
We have had a great first week back at school! Thank you for your partnership in having your child ready and at school prepared for the first week. Our arrival and dismissal was smooth and students seemed very eager to be back with us! We all are very excited for a great year ahead!
IMPORTANT: Student Attendance Updates
Missing school can impact your child's success. Students who miss more than 10% of school days are more likely to fall behind academically, struggle with social skills, and drop out of school.
Last year, one of every seven District 196 students missed over 10% of school days, which is just two days per month. To address this, we created new systems to support attendance.
It is important to understand the consequences that occur and processes we will follow when students are absent from school. Our goal is, as always, is to ensure that your child has the best opportunity to thrive.
TYPES OF ABSENCES
- Unexcused: If an absence is not reported within 48 hours, it will be deemed “unexcused”
Excused: Illness, medical/dental appointments during school hours, and pre-planned absences.
* Absences due to illness are excused for up to 10 days. A doctor’s note is required after 10 absences due to illness.
WHEN YOUR STUDENT NEEDS TO BE ABSENT
Report all absences online (student ID and birth date required) or call the school’s attendance office.
WHY ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Regular attendance helps students enjoy school more and feel connected to their community. It also boosts academic performance and enhances social skills.
We want to work with all families to support students in having a successful school year!
Update on Parkview Walking Crosswalks
As I mentioned in the previous newsletter, it is unpredictable for us to know how many students will be walking to school and how many patrols we will have to monitor the crosswalks. This year, we have a limited number of walking patrols and a limited number of students walking across our school crosswalks, so we will be focusing our support with patrols at our main crosswalk only: Gerdine Path and Foliage Ave.
Our patrols will be trained and begin working at this corner next week.
Parkview Elementary School Cell Phone and Smart Watch Policy
We are asking for your cooperation in what has become a concern at Parkview. Students are bringing cell phones to school and using them at school. While we understand that some parents provide cell phones to their children because of safety and communications issues, we will not be allowing students to use them during the school day. Our policy is that cell phones must be turned off when the students enter the building and they must be kept in their backpack. This same policy applies to smart watches, as they can be a distraction throughout the day. Smart watches may be worn only if they are set to SCHOOL MODE.
Students will be asked to put smart watches and cell phones in their backpack upon arrival.
They may be turned on again when the students leave the building at the end of the school day. Students will be advised of this policy, and we will appreciate your follow through at home. Please be aware that Parkview is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. We discourage students from bringing cellphones to school and we will take them away from students if they are not following the policy.
We ask parents to not call or text their child during the day on a personal cell phone or smart watch. If you must get in touch with your child for any reason, please call our school office at 952-431-8350 or send an email to your child’s classroom teacher.

Educational Benefits Application is Important for our school!
All families are encouraged to complete an Educational Benefits Application, formerly the free and reduced-price meals application. Your children may qualify! Applications for the 2024-25 school year are available.
While meals are free for all students, all families are highly encouraged to complete an Application for Educational Benefits. Your approved application provides critical funding to our school district. This compensatory aid helps increase funding for teachers, paraprofessionals and social workers to include math and reading support. An approval for educational benefits also allows families to receive discounted Activities/Community Education fees. Learn more about the Educational Benefits Program >
iPad Optional Protection Plan
District 196 offers an optional Protection Plan to families for $20 per iPad to cover the cost of potential theft/damage throughout the school year. The plan is free for families who qualify for the Educational Benefits Program so it is highly recommended to first apply online for that program in order to have the discount applied when purchasing the protection plan.
Go to the EduTrack Connect landing page to log in.
More information about the iPad Optional Protection Plan can be found at the link below, which also includes translation in Spanish and Somali. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oMBJN9Z8bY7rY1ZhtnQg5I-s41uBOkMShoCi1PExHhg/edit
