Dear MTE Community,
I hope that this newsletter finds you well. I have been doing a lot of thinking about self care lately. It is something that I am trying to be better at and that I am working to support our school community with being better at as well. Edmonds School District leadership wants to be very clear that mental health and well being are the TOP priorities right now. The most important thing is that students, staff and community members feel safe and supported. I encourage you all to stop and think about what truly effective self care looks like. I am clear that it is an individual thing, each of us needs different things to feel refreshed and refilled, and that is the beauty of self care-it is all about your SELF.
I am working on this myself. I fail many days, although I am still getting up the following day and trying again. Now is the time to take care of myself, my family and you all. So, I will continue to try and get back into a workout routine, snuggle with my kiddos, take night walks with my husband to have time to connect, get massages, and eventually meditate daily.
Here are some suggestions for self care:
EXERCISE
Take some time to move. We are spending a lot of time in front of screens lately. Take time to stretch, do yoga, walk, run etc. This is SO important for your physical and mental health.
TURN OFF THE TV
There is a lot of divisiveness happening in our world right now. Sometimes it is helpful to take time away for the negative we are currently inundated with. Turning off our screens also gives us an opportunity to connect with each other.
MEDITATE/READ
Meditation is proven to bring our blood pressure down. It is a great self care practice. Reading is a great way to get lost in a story that isn't yours and take a break from our current reality. I am currently reading Queenie by Candace Carty-Williams. My daughter is reading Dear Martin by Nic Stone.
LISTEN TO MUSIC AND DANCE
Music is healing. Turn the music up loud! Dance around the house. Sing at the top of your lungs. It feels GREAT!
BAKE
This is a fun messy way to spend time. A great way to bond with your children or loved ones and there are delicious treats at the end.
SLOW DOWN YOUR PRODUCTIVITY EXPECTATIONS
If you don't get to all the things you normally would in a day, that is ok. If you need to let something go off your plate, that is ok too. Let go of the nonessential.
REACH OUT TO THOSE YOU ARE CONNECTED TO OR THOSE YOU FEEL CAN SUPPORT YOU
Community and relationship are important. Make sure to reach out to your people, those that you are close to and that you connect with. You may need to virtually connect right now, but that is better than nothing. Share things you are grateful for in our community. Go for a socially distanced/masked up walk with your friends.
Above all, take care of yourselves and know I am here to support you.
Mary

COVID-19 Safety Handbook
The district has put together a detailed COVID-19 Safety Handbook for families. You can click here to open the digital document. In the handbook you will find health protocols and actions we all need to take daily to ensure safety for students and staff. You will also see plans for meals, transportation, cleaning, and procedures on how to report positive cases. This is a living document and will be updated if changes or updates from health officials are needed.
Power or Internet Outage Plan
Power outages are common in our region during fall and winter months. Internet outages occur from time to time, even when power is maintained. In the event of a regional power and internet outage, we fully understand that with the challenges families will face when dealing with the event, school work will simply have to take a lower priority. However, we hope to continue as much learning as possible during these events, especially when they are intermittent or on a smaller scale.
Edmonds teachers will communicate with students and families how to access learning activities in the event of a power or internet outage.
The table below summarizes possible scenarios and expectations.
Power OFF or Internet OUTAGE for Teacher Only
Log into Seesaw or Canvas – look for a message from your teacher.
Continue work on previously assigned learning activities.
Participate in asynchronous learning activities that have been previously assigned or are posted in Seesaw or Canvas.
NOTE: If a teacher’s power or internet goes out during class, log off of Zoom. Work on known learning activities or assignments.
Elementary students should try logging back into the Zoom session after 15 minutes, and then try again in 30 minutes. If this doesn’t work, try again for the next scheduled Zoom meeting (p.m. or following day).
Secondary students should try logging back in after 15 minutes and again after 30. Students should attend other classes according to their regular schedule.
Power OFF or Internet OUTAGE for one or a few students
Call your school’s attendance line to report power is out.
Participate in learning activities that have been previously assigned or provided as possible activities for this situation.
Document activities and report them to the teacher once the internet returns
Power or Internet OFF for Both Teacher and Students
To the extent you are able:
Call your school’s attendance line to report power is out.
Participate in learning activities that have been previously assigned or provided as possible activities for this situation.
Document activities and report them to the teacher once power/internet returns.

The Edmonds School District is changing the way families receive digital fliers.
We are excited to launch a new way of distributing digital fliers to our families! Introducing … Peachjar!
Peachjar is an app that will streamline the way you find out about different events, opportunities, etc. that are happening in the community and our school district.
You will get your first email from Peachjar on Friday, Oct. 30, 2020. After that, you will receive periodic emails from Peachjar with events and activities related to your school community.
Here’s a short video that explains the basics about Peachjar.
