February Newsletter
Principal's Message
February means the beginning of a new semester for many Students. It means all Students are at the halfway point of the school year and closer to things like field trips, the Grade 12 Farewell Ceremony, etc. Staff and Students have been working hard for the first five months to deliver high quality teaching, ensure optimal learning and demonstrate what it means to be PROUD at CHSPS! Here’s to a successful second half of the 2024-2025 school year.
A few quick reminders:
- Students should be checking/signing in at the main office when they are late so attendance can be recorded accordingly. If Students are going to be away, a call (780-384-3817) or email (chsps-aa@brsd.ab.ca) to the office is strongly recommended. If a Student signs out at the office at any point during the day, notification by a Parent/Guardian should still happen.
- Students need to be attending regularly, meeting deadlines and in good academic standing to be considered for school trips of any kind or to participate in extracurricular activities. Please support CHSPS by speaking to your child about these things. Together, we can make a difference!
- PowerSchool is a great source for Student academic progress via real-time reporting (marks and comments updated bi-weekly for core subjects). Please remember to reach out to your child’s Teacher if you have any questions. They are the first point of contact and will be able to speak about specifics directly with you. Email them directly to book an appointment if necessary (phone or in person).
Thank you very much for your ongoing support for Students and Staff at CHSPS. Our positive partnership is extremely valuable for the success of all Learners :)
Feel free to contact me and/or Mr. Madison Nickel if you ever have any questions (email: rcowan@brsd.ab.ca/mnickel@brsd.ab.ca or phone: 780-384-3817).
Be well always,
Richard Cowan
Principal
Treaty Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that the land on which we gather, traditionally known as asiniskawsipisis (Stoney Creek), is Treaty 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground for many Indigenous peoples. The land on which we are located provided a travelling route and home to the Maskwacis Nêhiyawak, Nakoda, Tsuut’ina Nations, the Métis, and other Indigenous peoples. Their spiritual and practical relationships to the land create a rich heritage for our learning and our life as a community.

International Student Program
The International Student Program welcomed 11 students from Japan to École Camrose Composite High School and Forestburg School in January.
These Grade 10 students had the opportunity to go into BRSD elementary classrooms. The international students engaged with local students in four themes organized into stations: teaching origami, playing Jenga, practicing with chopsticks and writing their names in Japanese.
This supports the goals of the International Student Program to develop global competencies and understanding of different cultures within our own BRSD students and to create excitement about new experiences.
Feedback from a teacher:
Thank you for organizing the Japanese students' visit to our school. The students loved the four activities the international students prepared and shared with us. The international students interacted and asked questions to our students to get to know them. It was a great way to share Japanese cultural activities with our Canadian students.

SSP
Grade 9-12 students have started new courses and may have some new teachers! If your child has an SSP please watch your inbox for an email from Dossier to sign their SSP digitally at the end of February. If you would like to have a meeting with all your child’s teachers to review the SSP please email Mrs. Hogstead at rhogstead@brsd.ab.ca
IXL
All CHSPS students in Grades 2-9 have IXL accounts for mathematics. This subscription site is beneficial because it gives students opportunities to practice a wide range of math skills. We know how important it is for students to have regular practice and to see material presented in various ways. Feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher for more information
