SD Met Family Updates
One student at a time
October 14, 2024
Thank you for attending Student-Led Conferences!
We have concluded our fall Student-Led Conferences! Thank you to all of our families for supporting your students and upholding your commitment to participating in key engagement opportunities like SLCs. We hope you enjoyed the chance to check in with your student's advisor, and hear your student lead a conversation about their learning. Please save the date for our next major student presentations, which will be our end of semester Exhibitions in December! We will see you back at the Met for your student's Exhibition!
College Visit to CSU San Marcos - Fri, Oct. 25
For our annual College Visit MetUp, the Met is going to CSU San Marcos for the first time! This is one of our Leaving to Learn (L2L) opportunities. Parents signed permission slips at the SLCs last week. The day begins at 8:30 and ends at 2:15. Please plan to pick up your student at the Met at 2:15 on October 25.
Here are the following food options during the field trip:
Students who would like to have a FREE school lunch need to let their Advisor know by Wednesday, October 16, to reserve a sack lunch.
Students may purchase lunch at one of several campus dining options.
Students may bring their own lunch.
This L2L is especially important because San Diego Unified School District and Cal State University San Marcos have established a partnership to provide guaranteed admission for students who meet certain requirements:
• Students must be continually enrolled in the District since 9th grade with exceptions for homeless, foster youth, and military dependents.
• Students must complete all A-G coursework required by CSU admission policies.
• Students must meet minimum CSU eligibility requirements.
• Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 upon graduation.
• Students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or The California Dream Act Application.
Students who complete their CSU application by October 21 and meet the requirements will also be invited to an CSUSM Admit on the Spot day to be held on Oct 26, 2024, at CSU San Marcos.
Our senior advisors and counselor are working with every eligible senior to complete the CSU San Marcos application by October 21. For more information about this partnership, see the link below:

Art Book - Support a Met Student Artist and Entrepreneur!
One of our extraordinary student artists, Evie Maher, is proud to announce that after many hours of formatting, rewriting, and editing, the book version of The Illustrated Unconscious is assembled and almost ready to be distributed. This book contains all 12 pieces from the exhibit in beautiful high definition quality and extended writeups about their context and meaning. Each hardcover measures 8.5 x 11 inches, and is available at a price of $35.
If you’d like to order a book, you can Venmo $35 to @evmaher77, and send a follow-up email to evmaher220@gmail.com. Alternative payment methods are available upon request. Books may be picked up in person at the Met with no additional charge. If you would like your copy mailed directly to you, please include a mailing address in your email to evmaher220@gmail.com, and include the shipping fee of $5 in your Venmo payment ($40 total). Copies of the book are being produced as orders are received, and should be available to pick up within one month.
Dia de los Muertos Activity
Our Studio Art students and their teacher, Ms. Armstrong, are celebrating Dia de los Muertos by creating a schoolwide Ofrenda (altar). All Met students are invited to bring in framed or unframed photos to add to the Ofrenda to commemorate loved ones. Please contact Mrs. Armstrong at aarmstrong@sandi.net with any questions.

PSAT for Juniors only - Wednesday, October 16
With the generous support of our school district, every 11th grader at the Met will be taking the PSAT for FREE this Wednesday, October 16! Please ensure your student arrives at school by 8:30am. Late arrivals will not be allowed to test and will be given alternate assignments. Students must bring their school issued Chromebooks fully charged, as the test is taken entirely on the computer.
Why do students take the PSAT? One great reason is the opportunity to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which can offer scholarships and recognition that may be advantageous when applying to colleges. Additionally, taking the PSAT can serve as a great practice for the format and timing of the SAT—think of it as a dress rehearsal.
10th graders will have the option of taking the PSAT in the spring.
Makeup Picture Day - Friday, October 18
For any students who missed our first Picture Day, our partners at Lifetouch Photography will be back on Friday, Oct. 18, to do makeup pictures. School photos are required for photo IDs and will be used in our Yearbook as well. Students who need their picture taken on Oct. 18 will need to dress appropriately and will have their picture taken in the Annex.

Important Facts
Attendance, Absences, Appointments
Good attendance is of the utmost importance for your student's learning. As an independent study school where students only attend their classes three days a week, it is vital that students are on time to EVERY class, EVERY day. Parents/guardians are required to inform our office (619-388-2299 or email Carolyn Dumas at cdumas@sandi.net) if your students will be absent or late. If you wish to request an early dismissal for your student, please notify our office no later than 10am that same day.
Please schedule all medical and dental appointments outside of school hours. We know that appointments can be challenging to get at times, but please do your best to support good attendance for your students so they do not miss any valuable learning at school!
Mental Health Supports
We will be supported again this year by a mental health clinician from Wellness Together. This year, our clinician is on campus on Mondays from 8:30 to 3:00. Students who are in need of mental health services may be referred to the clinician for one-on-one support. Please speak with your student's advisor or our counselor, Mr. Moravec, for more information.
Food on Campus
Free School Meals for All!
As part of the State of California's Universal Meals Program, all students in our school district are eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Meals will continue to be "grab and go" bags, and this year we have expanded our menu to include hot lunch options for the first time. If you would like your student to receive free meals at the Met, please sign up by emailing our interim administrative assistant, Carolyn Dumas, at cdumas@sandi.net. Students may also sign themselves up with Carolyn in the office.
Meals may be picked up inside K203 (office). Breakfast is served from 8:00 to 8:25, and lunch is served from 12:10 to 12:25. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, lunch is served from 11:30 to 11:45 for any student who wishes to take a lunch at the end of the Gateway class.

Senior Early Dismissal Policy
As part of supporting our 12th graders in having diverse opportunities for success, the Met has an early dismissal policy for qualified seniors. Students and parents/guardians must submit this Senior Early Dismissal application and await approval by the principal before any early dismissal can begin. Please note that the earliest that seniors may be dismissed is 12:10pm, and early dismissal does not apply on MetUp days (one Friday a month) or other special events that require student attendance until the end of the school day. Please refer to this Senior Early Dismissal Policy document for more details.
Letters of Recommendation for Early Action or Early Decision applicants
If you are applying for Early Action or Early Decision, you will need to complete your applications by November 1st or November 15th. If you need a letter of recommendation from Mr. Moravec, your teachers, or any other recommenders, you should give them AT LEAST 2 weeks advance notice, preferably more. If you would like Mr. Moravec to write you a letter, please complete this form and submit it to him when you request the letter.
