Luce Notes

Hello Luce Families,

Last week we had an amazing week of learning and excitement! The Kindergarten and first grade students engaged in a "touch the truck" event where they were able to explore a Canton fire truck and ambulance. Students in fourth and fifth-grade auditioned for the musical. Also, students in grades 2-5 were able to engage in the Bus Safety Program. This entailed allowing students to learn how to safely evacuate a bus in the case of an emergency. Finally, students were able to begin to receive assigned bus seats. By the end of next week, all students will have an assigned seat on the bus. This will help mitigate and reduce bus issues.

Scholastic Book Fair

This year's Book Fair is going to be epic! More Books. More Choices. More Fun!!

Choose. Read. Repeat. Your kids make the rules at the book fair. Empower them with "book choice" at our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair on Monday, October 30th through Friday, November 3rd! Students in grades 1-5 will visit the fair at their regular library time. Our Kindergarten friends are invited to a special family event on Thursday, November 2nd from 3:30pm - 7pm. Favorite Book Character Day is Tuesday, October 31

Students can dress up like their favorite book character on Tuesday! Halloween costumes are not allowed. Students should think about who their favorite character is and be creative on how they will dress to look like their favorite character.

Dining for Dollars Not Your Average Joes (Every Wednesday in November 11:30 am to 10 pm)

Thank you to all the families who went to the Dining For Dollars event at Chipotle! Our next event is this Wednesday! Come join us at the Dining for Dollars event at Not Your Average Joes each Wednesday in November from 11:30 am-10 pm.

Parking Lot Safety Reminders

During arrival, please remember to:

1. Pull your car up to the sign to allow for traffic to flow;
2. Please do not get out of your car to let your child out;
3. Cars should not idle in the fire zone;
4. Children should exit the car on the right side away from traffic to ensure the safety of the child(ren);
5. Cars should follow the loop to exit the parking lot and not cut the cones early to leave the lot to prevent potential accidents.

Building Safety (Repost)

Locked Doors -- As school employees we will continue to be vigilant about keeping exterior doors closed and locked at all times.

Buzz In -- When we buzz in a visitor, we will say, "Welcome to the Luce. What is your name and how can we help you?" If the office staff has any concerns about the visitor, they will not let them in.

School Grounds --School campuses are closed to the general public during school hours (including playgrounds, fields, basketball courts, walkways near and around our buildings). There are signs on the basketball and playground fences. If a non-school person is on the grounds during the school day they will be asked to leave.

Luce CAPT, Canton Association of Parents and Teachers, sells Spirit Wear (branded merchandise) in support of our school. This helps us come together as a community and feel proud of the Luce, as well as raise funds for school programming. This has traditionally been sold at our in-person events – we are excited to now offer online ordering!

Place your online order between Saturday, Oct 28 and Sunday, Nov 12. The site will stop accepting orders after Nov 12, as everything will go into production to be ready the week of Dec 4. You can choose to ship directly to an address you enter ($10 flat rate), or pick-up at the Luce, which will be arranged by the Luce CAPT. The site accepts PayPal and major credit cards (no Venmo or checks). Due to the custom nature of these products, items can not be returned.

Cantonstock is the annual music extravaganza that showcases hundreds of student musicians representing all performing ensembles in the Canton schools, and is the primary fundraiser for MusicCounts, the volunteer, non-profit group dedicated to supporting all music programs in all the Canton Public Schools! Each week, two students from each class will be selected as the SHINE ticket winners. Students receive SHINE tickets from staff members daily when they are observed practicing our SHINE core values. The SHINE core values are, Safety, Helping Others, Including All, Never Giving Up, and Exceeding Excellence & Equity.

Please join me in celebrating the first SHINE All-Stars for the year! Don't worry every child will get their chance to SHINE!

MCAS results were mailed to all families of students who took the MCAS in Spring 2023 at the Luce. I attached the PDF of the Luce 2023 MCAS results for your review. Below is also a link of the recorded presentation of the Luce 2023 MCAS.

Our K-2 students are using the UFLI Foundations phonics program this year. It is explicit, systematic, and follows a prescribed scope and sequence that builds over time. The program offers interleaved practice which means that students will continue to get practice with previous learned phonics skills while simultaneously being exposed to new phonics skills.

There are ways you can support this at home.Here is a youtube video that helps explain what to do with the UFLI Home Practice Pages and here is a copy of a UFLI Parent Letter that tells more about the phonics program.

We are so thrilled to announce the first of four Galvin Middle School Building Project Community Forums. These forums are part of the community engagement element that help inform the design and direction of the GMS Building Project, which is currently in the Feasibility Phase of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) process.

The first GMS Building Project Community Forum will be held on Wednesday, September 27, from 7-8 p.m., in the CHS Library. Our Design Firm Ai3, in collaboration with our Owner’s Project Manager (OPM) LeftField, will facilitate the forum

All are welcome, and all stakeholders in the Canton Community -- even those who may not have students in the school system currently -- are encouraged to attend. The more voices and perspectives, the better.

The September 27 Community Forum will focus on an overview of the project, including timelines, scope and milestones. The second half of the forum will involve an engaging activity that involves looking at an oversized site map of the GMS building and land space and making suggestions for use by schools and the community.

I have suggested that this is a “hopes and dreams” meeting, and really a great gathering of input on how the building and the site can enhance our educational and overall community. Leaders of youth programming -- from sports to the arts to the extracurriculars -- are encouraged to attend.

There is no need to RSVP. Please just arrive with your curiosity and your ideas. We will start promptly at 7 p.m., so please try to arrive by 6:45 p.m. in the CHS Library.

There will be three additional forums in October, November and December. Here are the “save the dates” and the themes for each one.

Wednesday October 25 -- The entire focus of this forum will be grade configuration (Grades 5-8 or 6-8). Location TBD.

Monday, November 20 -- The focus will be continued follow up on grade configuration and the consideration of a middle school auditorium. Location TBD.

Wednesday, December 20 -- The focus of the fourth forum will be an opportunity for a review of input and emerging themes from the process. Location TBD.

We are embarking on a great journey, and we want every member of the Canton community to be informed and have opportunities for input and engagement. We hope you can attend!
