Mrs. Sherrye Tolbert was appointed to a five-year term on the Trussville City Board of Education by the Trussville City Council in early March 2021. Once officially on board this June, Mrs. Tolbert will fill the vacancy of Mr. Stan Garrett, who will be completing an incredible three-term run on the TCS Board of Education. A longtime Trussville parent and resident, Mrs. Tolbert shares some of her journey with us in this Q&A.

The TCS Board of Education approved the 2021-2022 School Year Calendar at its March meeting. The calendar features a staggered start for students across K12 with last names A-M beginning school on August 11 and students whose last names begin with N-Z beginning school on August 12. Friday, August 13, 2021, will be the first day of school for all students.

The calendar also includes these highlights:

• Sept. 6 (Labor Day)
• Nov. 11 (Veterans Day)
• Nov. 24-26 (Thanksgiving)
• Dec. 20-Jan 2 (Winter Break)
• Jan. 5 (1st day for students, 2nd semester)
• Jan. 17 (MLK., Jr. Holiday)
• Feb. 21 (Presidents Day)
• March 21-25 (Spring Break)
• May 24 (Graduation)

The dates and times have been scheduled for the June 2021-June 2022 Trussville Board of Education Meetings and Work Sessions. All Board Meetings are held at the Central Office/Board of Education located at 113 North Chalkville Road, unless otherwise noted. Meetings/Work Sessions are generally held the third Monday of each month (subject to change with proper notification). Work sessions are generally held at 5:00 p.m. before the Board Meetings, which typically begin at 6:00 p.m. See the upcoming year's list of dates on the Trussville City Schools website.

The P.A.C.E. (Positive Attitudes Change Everything) Character Trait of the Month is "Patience." Patience is "...waiting until later for what you want now." The TCS Character Education Initiative is a major component of the district's Anti-Bullying Program. Defining the skills of character that are universally accepted as being good is a complex task. As part of our diversity plan, we also wanted to ensure the character education program reflects those skills of character that transcend cultural differences and are widely accepted by our community.

Superintendent Dr. Patti Neill and the Trussville Board of Education members helped spread random acts of kindness during February - with the help of Cahaba Elementary School students.

Students collected items and made donations to various entities on behalf of the Superintendent and Board of Education.

The Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) has officially recognized talented young artists from across Alabama school systems as part of the 2021 State Superintendent's K12 Visual Arts Exhibit." Three Trussville City Schools students earned honors for this year: Taylor McLaughlin (HTMS) for her work titled "Yayoi Kusama Cosmic Pumpkins;" Emma Haynes (HTMS) for her work titled "Mosaic;" and Kyla Cherry (HTHS) for her work titled "Stripes." Mrs. Kristin Meriam-Bloodworth serves as art teacher for HTMS and Mrs. Layken Rubin teaches art at HTHS. See the full list of ALSDE winners across Alabama by school system.

Cahaba Elementary School (CES) has been recognized by the Legislative School Performance Program (LSPP). CES has been ranked among the state's top 25% of public schools through the LSPP metrics. The LSPP rewards public schools, based on the school grading system, that demonstrate high performance by being ranked in the top 25% of public schools or that demonstrate exemplary progress by improving their overall annual ranking by at least one letter grade. CES received a letter of recognition and a $5,000.00 check this week.

To fully celebrate “Oh, the Places You Will Go” Day during Read Across America Week, students at Magnolia Elementary dressed like their future career. Second Graders in Mrs. Gamble’s class have high aspirations, as this slideshow depicts. From precious babies… to an inspirational future! Paine Elementary Kindergarten kicked off its weather unit with a virtual visit from ABC 33/430 Chief Meteorologist James Spann - otherwise known as "Alabama's Meteorologist." Mr. Spann explained the art and science of forecasting to Paine Kindergartners. He also discussed the different types of weather, and what to do if there is bad weather. With Wednesday, March 17, 2021, being a severe weather day, Mr. Spann's talk with the students could not have been more timely.

It was officially announced this month that Hewitt-Trussville Middle School (HTMS) has been chosen to be part of the A+ College Ready Cohort 14. This exciting opportunity came about thanks to collaborative work from school and district personnel and included a virtual site visit with the staff from A+ College Ready. So, what does this mean? HTMS will embark on a three-year relationship with A+ College Ready that will involve school-wide implementation involving comprehensive professional development and support for our staff throughout this process. HTMS will have a very focused approach on how to provide rigor and support for ALL students to prepare them to take higher level courses in high school.

The Hewitt-Trussville High School Varsity Scholars Bowl team competed in the 2021 ASCA Virtual District Tournament on Friday March 5, 2021. The team, led by seniors J.P. Campbell and Evan Moore, defeated Vestavia Hills High School and Spain Park high school en route to winning its pool. The team earned an automatic bid into the 2021 ASCA State Championship as well as the 2021 NAQT National Championship and the 2021 National Academic Challenge. The Scholars Bowl team looks forward competing in the upcoming ASCA State Championship Tournament on May 15, 2021.

• April 25th from 2:30pm-5:30pm
• May 3rd from 5:00pm-7:00pm

The Trussville Archery Club (TAC) season will be April 17-June 16, 2021. Registration begins today (Friday, March 5) via www.trussvilleparks.org. The cost: $75.00 (all equipment provided; includes an Original Genesis Compound Bow). We are excited to have instructor Kristy Montgomery conduct this course. Montgomery is NASP, USA, and S3DA certified. She currently instructs the Home School co-op group SCOPE located in Moody. Practices will be Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. This program is sponsored by the Trussville Parks and Recreative Division.
