The Weekly Update

What a week we had last week! Lumberjack sports continue to make us all proud! The high school volleyball and football teams travelled to Cambridge on Friday and both won hard fought victories over the Titans, including a 4th quarter come-from-behind victory in football! What an exciting game and a huge victory for the Lumberjacks taking down the top-ranked team in our conference! It is hard to believe, but jr high sports are wrapping up their seasons already. The jr. high girls travelled to Midvale for the Long PIN Championship tournament where they advanced all the way to the championship game placing second! Way to go girls! The future is bright for this group of young ladies! Speaking of bright futures, the jr high football team will play in their championship game against Tri-Valley this Wednesday at 5:00 at home! We also have home games for the high school with both volleyball and football taking on Garden Valley on Friday! This will be Senior Night for the football and cross country teams! It's going to be another great week to be a Lumberjack! I hope to see you all out there!

Jr. High Student of the Week: Susan Mendenhall - nominated by her teachers for being and engaged and involved student, a hard worker, and a contributor in class. Great job!

High School Student of the Week: Isabel Duncan - nominated by her teachers for always being pleasant and respectful, and for consistently doing high quality work. Way to go!

We are carrying on our campaign for increasing awareness on the importance of attendance! I am putting a challenge on all our students to maintain 95% average daily attendance! This is going to take all of us to achieve! If you need some motivation, here is some data on the importance of attendance.

Did you know...

• Chronic absenteeism means missing 10% of school or more in a school year. At Council School District, that means missing more than 7 days a semester!
• Chronic absenteeism is leading indicator of dropping out. One study found that if a student is chronically absent any year after 8th grade, they are 7.4 times more likely to drop out than a student with regular attendance
• Students who are chronically absent are 1.7 times more likely to read below grade level than their peers who attend regularly.
• Students who are chronically absent tend to score lower on state testing than their peers who attend regularly.
• On average, being chronically absent in one grade increased the odds of being chronically absent in the next grade by nearly thirteen times
  

The negative effects of absenteeism are endless. Remember... Attendance Matters!!!
