Children's Book Author Visits RULH Elementary!
RULH elementary students had a special treat on "Right to Read Day". On Monday, March 3rd, RULH Elementary 2nd and 4th grade students welcomed Louise Borden, children’s book author. Mrs. Borden engaged students with a presentation and reading of her books!
Louise Borden was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1949. Inspired by a grandmother who loved history, Borden grew up fascinated by the stories of ordinary people and their relation to historical events. An avid reader of nonfiction and historical fiction, Borden majored in history at Denison University. She worked as a teaching assistant and later as a teacher for young children, and realized a lifelong dream when she became co-owner of The Bookshelf, a bookstore in her hometown of Cincinnati.
In 1971, Borden (then Walker) married Peter Borden. It was when the younger of their two daughters started elementary school that Borden began work on her first children's book, Caps, Hats, Socks, and Mittens: A Book About the Four Seasons. Her love of history has come into play in many of the books that have followed, as has her experience - through both teaching and parenthood - with children's thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Borden enjoys playing tennis, watching baseball (she's still an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds), and reading, a pastime which keeps her mindful of the interests of her audience.
Second grade students heard the story America Is… and learned about places throughout our country. Fourth grade students listened to the story Across the Blue Pacific, a story about World War II.
A special thank you to Mrs. Louise Borden for giving our students this wonderful opportunity!

Ms. Molly Ross Selected to March with Band Directors in 2026 Rose Bowl Parade
The extraordinary dedication and accomplishments of band directors are well known to their students, to their families, to parents and to school teachers and administrators. These dedicated music educators and leaders work long hours to not only teach and conduct music, but to teach life itself. Student lives in particular are positively changed by a motivational leader who teach, inspire and mentor them. For this reason, we chose the theme for our project to be "America's Band Directors: We teach music. We teach life." Congratulations Ms. Ross!

RULH Fourth Graders Enjoy "Hands On" Learning Experiences!
Social studies and science students in Mrs. Deanna Adams fourth grade class have been busy with "hands-on" learning experiences! In social studies, they wrapped up an American Revolution unit with an exciting tax simulation. One student played the role of King George III, while others acted as tax collectors who collected M & M's (candy) as payment. The "colonists" quickly realized how frustrating excessive taxation could be, gaining a deeper understanding of why the colonies rebelled!
In science, students just completed their animal adaptations unit. They finished with a fun and interactive bird beak lab. The students used different utensils to represent various bird beaks, and they tested which "beaks" were best suited for picking up different types of food. This experiment helped them see firsthand how birds have adapted to their environments over time.
It's been an exciting time in the fourth grade science and social studies classroom as they continue to learn through exploration and experience!
