Principal's Message
Comet Nation,
I hope you and your family are enjoying the start of your summer break! On behalf of the faculty and staff of Marion L. Steele High School, we thank you for your continued support this past school year. Our students' successes are a direct result of our valued partnerships with our school, families, and the community.
This final newsletter of the 2023-2024 school year highlights our fourth grading period academic award winners and provides important information for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.
The Class of 2028 will be welcomed to Marion L. Steele High School at Freshman Orientation on August 14th from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm.
We hope to see you at Open House on August 15th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm. All parents are encouraged to attend the parent meeting which will begin promptly at 4:00 pm in the Cafetorium.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the high school main office from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm until Wednesday, June 26th. We will return from summer break on Thursday, August 1st.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024!
Amherst Exempted Village Schools celebrated our 136th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 25th. Congratulations to the Steele Class of 2024 for all of your accomplishments and best of luck in all future endeavors!
The Class of 2024 included:
- 19 Military enlistees
- 4 Military Academy appointments
- 59 National Honors Society members
- 78 students who earned an honors diploma
- 5 MLS Academic Hall of Fame recipients

HIGH HONOR ROLL
Students achieving High Honor Roll earned an average GPA of 3.65 or higher.

Students achieving Honor Roll earned an average GPA between 3.00 - 3.64
Returning Student Registration
All emergency, medical, and contact information for all K-12 students will be collected through the Returning Student Registration process in your PowerSchool Parent Portal account at the start of each school year.
To complete the process, please go to your PowerSchool Parent Portal account, click on the Returning Student Registration link in the left menu, and follow the prompts. For step-by-step directions, please refer to this Online Returning Student Registration Directions document.
If you completed this process last year, most of your child's emergency and contact information will be pre-filled on this year's form. You will simply need to check, verify, and update any changes.
Thank you in advance for updating your returning student's information as soon as possible.
Parking Passes
All student drivers parking on Amherst Exempted Village School District property must obtain a parking permit and follow the student parking rules outlined on page 26 of the Marion L. Steele Student/Parent Handbook.
Parking Permits will be available to purchase on the following dates for certain groups of students. The online parking application will be available on the Steele website under the information tab on Monday, August 12th.
August 12th: Seniors Only
August 13th: Seniors & Juniors Only
August 14th and beyond: Open to any student driver
Meningitis Vaccine Requirement for 12th Grade Entry
The Ohio Health Department, under Ohio Revised Code 3701.13 and 3313.671, requires all students entering the 12th grade to provide written proof that they have received a dose of the Meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine after age 16.
Please ensure the school has proof of your child’s vaccine on file by September 10th. Students without proof of the meningitis vaccine may be subject to exclusion from school.
EcoLeague Summer Collection Bin
MLS EcoLeague is collecting used electronic devices (i.e. used mobile phones, tablets, laptops, AirPods/ear pods, fit bits/smart watches, VR headsets, and Beats/Bose headphones) and for every dollar value, a tree is planted. The collection bin is in between the double doors in our main lobby. Click this link for additional information!

Student Schedules
Student schedules for the 2024-2025 school year are available in PowerSchool Parent Portal.
To view your schedule, log into your ParentPortal account via the website (schedules are not available to view in the ParentPortal app) and click on “Next Year Schedule”. Please note a student’s schedule will only be changed to correct an incomplete schedule or to meet graduation requirements. If you have any questions about your schedule, please contact your school counselor. School Counselors will be back in the office on August 9th.

Late Arrival or Early Release is a special privilege for juniors and seniors with at least five credits for the year and who have an opening in their schedule.
Eligible students must submit a Late Arrival/Early Release Application. This application will be posted to the Steele Webpage on Monday, August 12th. Once approved, the student's schedule will be changed. Students must have Late Arrival/Early Release on their schedule before starting. There will be no Late Arrival on the first day of school.
Open Campus
Open Campus is another special privilege for juniors and seniors with at least five credits and are in good academic standing.
Eligible students must submit an Open Campus Application. This application will be posted to the Steele Webpage on Monday, August 12th. Once approved, the student's schedule will be changed. Students must have Open Campus Lunch on their schedule before starting.
Link Crew
Class of 2028,
We are excited to have you join us at Steele! Link Crew is a transition program for freshmen and it starts with an exciting and fun orientation with your high school link leaders. All students will be assigned to a link leader, please be aware that your link leader will be calling a few days before orientation to personally invite you to orientation. Have a great summer and we look forward to welcoming you all in August!
Freshman Orientation
Freshman Orientation is for students only. Students should be dropped off at the South Entrance (stadium lot) for Freshman Orientation in the main gym. Parents are encouraged to attend the Parent Information Meeting during Open House on Thursday, August 15th at 4:00pm in the cafetorium.

Spring 2024 Athletic Highlights- Track and Field
Milestone Achievement:
Congratulations to Senior Natalie Pleban who earned her 12th varsity letter this spring. She has earned four letters each in soccer, basketball, and track & field.
School Records:
Luke Bowlsby: set a new 1600m school record at the Mason Invitational with a time of 4:12.68. The record he broke stood for 50 plus years. Additionally, as a result of this performance, Luke earned All-American honors from the National High School Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association!
Natalie Pleban: set a new long jump record with a jump of 18 feet, one half inch at the OHSAA District Meet.
Alex Sixbey: set a new pole vault with a vault of 12 feet one inch at the OHSAA District Meet.
Shuttle Hurdle Relay: Alex Vargo, Anyja Peacock, Ashley Grapes, and Natalie Pleban set a new shuttle hurdle standard with a time of one minute eight point four eight seconds at Comet Relays. Great job ladies!
State Qualifiers:
Natalie Pleban qualified in two events, the 100m hurdles and high jump. She finished 18th in both events. This was Natalie's second straight trip to the OHSAA Division I State Track & Field meet.
Alex Sixbey: After winning District and Regional Championships, Alex competed in the pole vault at the OHSAA Division I State Track & Field Meet. She finished 11th overall as a freshman.
Spring 2024 Athletic Highlights- Softball
Congratulations to Kristen Kelley who was honored as Lorain County Miss Softball!
For the second straight year, Kristen Kelley was also named Division I Honorable Mention All-Ohio as a softball player. This season she hit just under 0.500 with 43 hits, including 6 doubles and 5 triples. She drove in 35 runs while scoring 38 times.
2024 Fall Sports
While summer is just getting started, it’s not too early to start thinking about 2024 fall sports. If you have not previously played a fall sport or you are new to the high school (freshman or transfer), and you have interest in participating with one of our programs, please contact the coach of the program(s) you are interested in to see what their plans are for this this summer.
Fall Sports officially start on August 1st (unless noted otherwise below). However, most of our programs have opportunities to participate over the summer. Take advantage of those opportunities, so that you are ready to go come August!
