Back to School!
Dear Ross Community,
Nine weeks of 6:30 am wake-ups to catch our summer-camp bus have come to a close! 7:00 am looks blissful, as does the less-scalding weather, and my two happy kids ready for their new school year. I hope your summer breaks have been relaxing and full of good memories. Now let's get back to school!
The PTA has penned up a Back-to-School Checklist for you that includes all your final to-do's to get ready for next week! Two events to remember are the Sneak a Peek this Friday and Back to School Night on September 5. All details below, as well as some info about the Highlighter Back-to-School Challenge; we hope you'll take a moment to vote for Ross!
May your last few days of break be full of good weather and happy kids.

Your Back-to-School Checklist
Here are a few things to check off your list before K-5 kids head back to school on August 26 and pre-K kids join us on August 29.
⬜ Buy your school supply package here by August 25. One item to purchase on your own is a reusable water bottle, which should be labeled with your child’s name and sent to school each day. For pre-K and K students, send a change of clothing in a labeled Ziploc bag to be kept in the classroom in case of accidents.
⬜ Send any/all updated health and dental forms to Ms. Segovia.
⬜ Sign up for a school lunch account here if you haven’t previously signed up and want your child to be able to buy lunch at school.
⬜ Get in touch with your Room Parent to be added to their email and WhatsApp lists, if you weren’t previously. Room Parent emails are linked here: PK, K, 1, 2, 3, 4a, 4b. We are still in search of a 5th grade Room Parent; please get in touch with Principal Searl if you’re interested.
⬜ Add the DCPS calendar to your calendar. And mark your calendar with dates from our school’s calendar (see Key Dates below).
⬜ Look out for a daily schedule paper to be sent home after school starts. You will complete and return this paper to indicate your child’s daily schedule and parent/caregiver phone number. Often, kids are confused about where they’re going each day after school; this will help staff and students during dismissal.
⬜ Seek DCPS Volunteer clearance. If you want to volunteer in the school or join field trips, you must be cleared by DCPS through this process. Note: This is not required for most PTA activities listed in the following point.
⬜ Sign up to volunteer with the PTA. There are many ways to volunteer at Ross! Sign up here to express your interest in and learn more about these PTA efforts: school-wide events, Spooktacular, book drive, open houses, DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion), garden improvement, tree and bake sale, Story of Our Schools, teacher appreciation, the Ross library, Ross merchandise, safe transportation, and the Ross auction.
Reminder: Sneak a Peek, this Friday, August 23, 2:30 pm
This Friday, August 23, at 2:30 pm will be our Sneak a Peek event, when you will be able to meet your teachers, see the classrooms, and connect with Ross friends. The PTA will have popsicles on the playground after the event and fun new Ross merchandise will be available for purchase. We look forward to seeing you there!
Back to School Night: Thursday, September 5, 5:00 pm
Mark your calendars for Ross Back to School Night, which will take place at school on Thursday, September 5, from 5:00-6:30 pm. Back to School Night is an opportunity for parents and caregivers to meet and connect with their children's teachers and other staff members, see the classroom and school, discuss the curriculum, and ask questions. There will be rotations with identical programming like last year.
The PTA is still working with aftercare vendors to extend aftercare programming or provide childcare at Ross, but at this time we cannot confirm that this will be available. We will provide updates as soon as we have them!
Vote for the Ross PTA!
The education company Highlighter is celebrating its launch in the DC region with The Big, Bold Back-to-School Challenge. They are offering $5,000 to the winning public-school PTA! To win the prize, a school simply needs to collect the most votes, so it is all about rallying the community to participate. The more people who know about the challenge, the better our chances. You can get more information and vote here. Please vote for Ross today!
