A message from Career Academy Principal, Mrs. Katie Towler
The end of the semester is quickly approaching. January 16th will be our final class day of the first semester and students will not have school on the 17th. Please remind your students to tie up any loose ends as soon as they can.
We are excited to have hosted several 4th and 5th grade classrooms over the last couple of months and are looking forward to meeting every 8th grade and 9th grade student in the district as they tour in January. As we dive into registration season please keep the Career Academy courses in mind as great options to prepare students for the future.
Our pathway for the month of January is business. Within our business department students can focus on accounting, marketing, management, finance, and entrepreneurship. Students in the business pathways are preparing to be better informed consumers, financially wise citizens, and potentially business professionals. Students learn from real-life situations and put their skills to practice in local and area competitions, and spend time collaborating with local business partners.
If you or your student have a question about the business pathways that we offer please feel free to contact us at the Career Academy. As always, thank you for partnering with us.

Business, Finance & Marketing 2019-20 Highlights:
Special Event Highlights:
University of South Dakota Business Academy Day.
On Friday, October 11, 2019, the students enrolled in the Accounting, Business and Marketing courses at the Sioux City Career Academy attended the fourth annual Business Academy Day at the University of South Dakota. USD’s Beacom School of Business developed this event as a highly engaging, experiential day of learning for the students in the Sioux City Community School District’s
Business and Marketing
Academy. Students participated in several hands-on, interactive sessions focused on business administration, entrepreneurship, operations, and accounting.
Innovate Competition at Northwestern College.
On November 22nd, students from the Human Resource Management course at the Sioux City Career Academy’s Business and Marketing pathway attended the Innovate Competition at Northwestern College. The students were each placed into groups with students from other schools where they worked alongside Diamond Vogel employees and NWC business students. The groups were tasked with creating a proposal to pitch to Diamond Vogel executives on how the company can creatively recruit and retain high school graduates and young adults as long-term employees. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three proposals/plans. Two of our students were on the 1st and 3rd place teams.
It was a wonderful experience opening the eyes of our business students to how the content in the Human Resource Management class is applied in the real-world of business.
Inside the classroom highlights:
Introduction to Business-
· Students in the Introduction to Business college course have been learning about the basic areas in business. Some of the areas the class has studied so far in the semester are: the world of business and economics; ethical and socially responsible business; global business; forms of business ownership; small business, entrepreneurship and franchises; understanding the management process; the flexible organization; and producing quality goods and services.
· As the students complete each area of focus, they participate in application activities to help them understand the concepts on a deeper level. As seen in the accompanying pictures, students had to practice management skills as they rotated through each of the “five tables.” As they moved to each table, a different student became the manager responsible for directing and completing the task. Students had an opportunity to reflect on effective management strategies and what it was like to manage others. Another hands-on application activity is shown in the airplane production and quality control process. Students had to determine an efficient production process while attempting to achieve the highest profits. Additional students played the role of quality control to ensure that the planes were being produced according to the prototype standard.
· In order to make the course content more relevant and real, students in this course have the opportunity to meet with people in various businesses and industry. For example, the students met with the Chief Financial Officer of the Sioux City Community School District to learn about how businesses accounting, finance and financial management occurs in the real world. In addition, they met with the Branch Manager/Financial Advisor of Stifel Nicolaus Investments to understand how securities markets are used for financing and investment opportunities for raising capital.
Accounting I and Accounting II –
· Accounting I students study the rules and guidelines that businesses must follow when reporting financial data. These principles are generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). As they apply GAAP, they learn about the accounting equation, the rules of debit and credit for the various classifications of accounts and begin to journalize basic accounting transactions. At this point in the semester, students in Accounting I are using t-accounts to use debits and credits in business transactions. As they proceed through the year, they will journalize transactions in the general journal. They will also create various financial reports, such as trial balance, income statements, balance sheet, statement of changes in owner’s equity, etc.
· The Accounting II students are expanding the application of GAAP from the foundation of the Accounting I course. After using a mini-practice set to review the procedures from the first-year accounting course, the Accounting II students transitioned from accounting procedures for a sole-proprietorship to handling accounting records for a merchandising corporation. This fall, they are learning how to journalize transactions in four special journals (Cash Receipts Journal, Sales Journal, Cash Payments Journal and Purchases Journal) and utilize new accounts for a merchandising corporation. Students in the Accounting II course recently met with a partner at Henjes, Conner & Williams, P.C., a local certified public accounting firm.
Human Resource Management –
· Students in the college course of Human Resource Management, combine theoretical and practical approaches to human resource management. At the beginning of the semester, HRM students met with the Director of Human Resources for the Sioux City School District to understand how a HR Department functions within an organization. Throughout the semester, students participate in various application assignments to develop their understanding of the key topics in HRM. For example, so far this semester, they have practiced interviews with potential candidates, developed recruitment plans, created training plans, etc.
Entrepreneurship-
· The students in the Entrepreneurship class started the semester by learning about entrepreneurs and innovators from the Sioux City area. After researching historical innovators and entrepreneurs at the Sioux City Museum, students selected one to present to the class as a recommended candidate to join the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce. During this part of the course, the students also had the opportunity to meet with two local entrepreneurs, Juan Munoz and Erik Munoz, who started the Brightside Café & Deli. The students had the opportunity to ask the entrepreneurs questions and learn from their experiences starting a new business in Sioux City. Currently, the entrepreneurship students are beginning the discovery process to develop a new business product or service and preparing for the upcoming Innovation Grow Entrepreneurial Competition.
