Full Week of Learning!
Looking Beyond the Stars
Our 1st graders are learning all about our Solar System as part of their current reading unit. Students are learning science content as they learn new comprehension skills for informational text. Students are learning that Earth is a planet in our Solar System while they are learning to use text features (chapter headings, picture captions, and text structure, to name a few) to comprehend text.
Students are applying the phonics rules they are learning in their Fundations lessons, while they are learning about planets, stars, how the Sun supplies energy to Earth, and other important science concepts. Our students are always being challenged! We appreciate our amazing 1st grade team - Ms. Atchison, Ms. Cooper, and Ms. Currier! Supporting them are Mrs. Penn, reading teacher, Ms. Truss, math intervention, and Ms. Bowlding, supporting small group instruction.
Space! The Final Frontier
Images of space
Students draw their understanding of the relationship between an among planets in our solar system.
Not just one and done
Students use their space journals to record information over time, to grow and develop their understanding of space.
Important Vocabulary
Students learn the accurate names of bodies in our solar system. Vocabulary deepens their knowledge and ability to express their understanding of concepts. Our kids are BRILLIANT!

Addition Update
Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School is currently in the construction phase of a one-year addition project scheduled for completion in Summer 2025. The goal of this project is to address the school’s reported concerns of overcrowding and will add four classrooms and additional support spaces to the building to help the school’s programmatic needs and diverse student population. Per the Ed Spec, the project scope includes the following:
Project Duration: Summer 2024 – Summer 2025
Total Number of Classrooms: Four
First Floor – two K/1 classrooms, one workspace
These classrooms will include furniture, millwork, and fixtures (including bathroom appliances i.e., toilets, sink heights, etc.) designed for typical K/1st classrooms aligned with the DCPS and school-specific Ed Spec.
Second Floor – two K/1st classrooms
Furniture, millwork, and fixtures (including bathroom appliances i.e., toilets, sink heights, etc.) in these classrooms will reflect the availability for “flex” options to accommodate the school’s upper grade levels.
Additional Support Spaces:
Staff-facing space/workspace
Mechanical, Electric, and Plumbing (MEP) space
Laundry
Additional Information and Context:
Originally, the project scope included four classrooms, which were all intended to be K/1 classrooms and Early Childhood Education (ECE) serving PK3/4. However, after additional collaboration between school leadership, parent community and DCPS Facilities, the scope was restructured to better accommodate requests from school leadership.
The school asked for the project to 1) provide solutions for overcrowding and 2) provide flexibility for the two second-floor classrooms to potentially accommodate upper grade levels. This flexibility includes certain design elements that provide the proper accommodations for K/1 classrooms per the district-wide and school-specific Ed Spec, while allowing space for the school’s input and discretion regarding which age groups will eventually utilize the space. For example, these classrooms will still include en-suite bathrooms, but the millwork and furniture will include accommodation for all grade levels. The project no longer includes any ECE classrooms due to the input and concerns of the school expressed in the early stages of the project.
