Author and illustrator Tim Young will visit Edison School on Wednesday, March 9th. Students will have an intimate lesson with Mr. Young.
PreK Partners
The students in Room 5 will begin reading to the afternoon PreK class this week. Students will be partnered with a PreK student and will have the opportunity to read to their partner on Friday afternoons. As our partnerships develop the students will work on small projects together too! This is a very exciting opportunity for our Second Graders to be positive learning role models to a younger child!

This week, we will begin Unit 4 in Journeys, the theme of this unit is “Heroes and Helpers”. The first story in this unit is about a community helper, a principal of an elementary school. We’ll also read an informational text called Playground Fun.

Writing: How To
We spent time last week studying How To texts and identifying the features that all How To pieces include. We practiced writing the steps to a simple task. We will now choose a How To idea and begin to draft a How To story using the common features studied. We will plan, revise, edit and write a How To piece of writing. We will share our writing with the class. The we will create a How To presentation using the Adobe Voice App.
Social Studies
In Social Studies this week we will learn to interpret a bar graph. Students will also practice following a route on a map. Once a location is determined, the students will use a compass rose to decide the best direction to go and create an appropriate route. Later this week we will complete our unit on People. We will learn how ideas and culture spread from one place to another. We will also learn how science and technology have changed communication. We will complete our study of unit vocabulary and review for an assessment. It has been a great experience to learn about each other and our cultures! Thank you for your personal family contributions to this unit!
